FAQs

Ethiopian coffee beans are coffee beans that are grown in Ethiopia. Ethiopia has a decorated history of coffee bean farming, one that goes back numerous centuries ago. It is the origin for one of the most preferred strains of coffee, Coffea Arabica, often termed as Arabica coffee.

Ethiopian coffee beans total three percent of the global coffee production. This clearly exhibits the influence that the Ethiopian coffee production regions have on global coffee consumption.

It is believed that, about one thousand years ago, a goat herder happened on the coffee plant in Kaffa. Thus, the birth place of coffee in Ethiopia is in Kaffa. Even what it is called is similar to Coffee.

Ethiopian coffee is known all over the globe for the quality of flavour and the level of perfection it comes with. However, why does Ethiopian coffee taste so good?

Ethiopian coffee, ostensibly, is known for its bright mouthfeels & the winery taste and quality it has. The coffee beans from this region are usually of greater acidity & have complex tasting notes.

The main reason behind the taste that comes & is linked with Ethiopian coffee is the processing used. Ethiopian coffee beans are naturally processed; they are dried while the cherry fruit is still attached to the coffee bean. Therefore, the coffee beans show winery tomes, & they usually have a greater acidity than coffee beans from other countries.

A medium roast will result in the best balance between body, flavours, and acidity for Ethiopian coffee. That being said, you have to try out a bit to get that perfect roast since Ethiopian coffee beans are small & can be finicky, which makes it difficult to roast them.

There are a myriad of Ethiopian coffee varieties. Ethiopian coffee is cultured in particular areas in the country; Harar, Limu, and Yirgacheffe. The climatic & soil conditions of these regions differ, this changes the taste of the coffee each area farms.

The coffee types are mainly sold as the regions of their origin.

These coffee types are Sidamo, Harar, and Genika.

Yirgacheffe coffee is a washed, wet-processed coffee grown in & nearby to a small village in south Ethiopia, named Yirgacheffe. The coffee is at altitudes inbetween 1700 & 2200 meters above sea level. Such altitudes qualify Yirgacheffe coffee to be classified as Strictly Hard Bean (SHB).

Such altitudes slow down the fast growth of coffee. Since the coffee plants grow at a slow pace, they have more time to soak in all the nutrients in the soil. With the local climate, the Yirga Cheffe also plays a huge role; the fruit can develop a more robust taste.

Ethiopian Yirga Cheffe coffee is characterized by its bright acidity and the clean and complex floral notes in its aroma. At times, the aroma can even have a hint of coconut. Some Ethiopian Yirga Cheffe coffee types have notes of citrus & tangerine.

Yirga Cheffe coffee is said to be the best coffee cultivated in the south region of Ethiopia & also holds its own against other coffee types from other locations.

Single-origin coffee is coffee that comes from a small and specific area in the world. Many coffee lovers do believe that a single coffee origin is, in fact, better than other varieties of coffee as it is purer & more stable in flavour. This exclusivity makes single-source coffee more favouable.

Yirga Cheffe Coffee is, in fact, single-origin as it is only cultured and processed in the Yirgacheffe origin. That is the reason why it exhibits distinctive notes, aromas, and the feelings it induces.

Ethiopian coffee is Arabica. Ethiopia is where the coffee Arabica, which is the coffee shrub, comes from. Now, it is produced in many countries worldwide, however Ethiopia still produces a lot of it. As mentioned before, Ethiopia farms 3 % of all the coffee in the world, which is pretty significant.

Ethiopian Harrar coffee is a wild & exotic naturally processed variety of Arabica coffee. It is mainly grown on small farms found in the Oromia region, formally named Harrar. Thus, the coffee is eponymous.

Sidamo coffee is an Ethiopian coffee variety produced exclusively in the Sidamo.

Sidamo is a big region in the fertile highlands in the Rift Valley. Sidamo is one of three trademarked coffee regions in Ethiopia (along with Harrar and Yirgacheffe). Sidamo coffee beans are known for their rich, full body and crisp acidity. They also have floral and citrus notes.

Ethiopian coffee has a mild and pleasant acidity, as well as a heavy winery and floral taste. The coffee also has a bright fruited taste. One is left with notes of blueberry, jasmine, and bergamot in the aftertaste.

The fruity flavours that characterise Ethiopian coffee can come across as sourness. This fact is proliferated when you switch to light coffee, like Ethiopian coffee, and you are used to the darker roasts.

It is strong. Even though Ethiopian coffee is so diverse, with a range of different flavour varieties, a lot the coffee, especially from places like Sidamo & Limu, is complex & can prove strong, especially with nascent coffee drinkers.

This depends on the type of Ethiopian coffee you are drinking. The coffee {farmed|grown in some areas in Ethiopia are more acidic than others, so it is good to check where the coffee is from. Ostensibly though, Ethiopian coffee is of mild acidity.

No, Ethiopian coffee doesn’t. Most of the Ethiopian coffee types are Coffee Arabica, that has a coffee percentage of 1.5. On the other hand, Robusta coffee, the strongest coffee, contains a caffeine percentage of 2.4. Thus, Ethiopian coffee doesn’t have more caffeine than other types from different areas in the world.
