FAQs

Ethiopian coffee beans are coffee beans that are farmed in Ethiopia. Ethiopia has a decorated history of coffee farming, one that goes back numerous centuries ago. Ethiopia is the origin to one of the most preferred strains of coffee, Coffea Arabica, often termed as Arabica coffee.

Ethiopian coffee beans make up three percent of the global coffee market. This clearly shows the importance that the Ethiopian coffee cultivation locations have on global coffee consumption.

It is believed that, about one thousand years ago, a goatherd stumbled upon the coffee tree in Kaffa. Thus, the origin of coffee in Ethiopia is in Kaffa. Even what it is called is similar to Coffee.

Ethiopian coffee is known all over the world for the quality of taste & the amount of refinement it has. However, why does Ethiopian coffee taste so great?

Ethiopian coffee, primarily, is known for its light mouthfeels & the winery flavour & quality it has. The coffee beans from this area are usually of greater acidity and come with complex flavour notes.

The main reason behind the flavour that comes and has been associated with Ethiopian coffee is the processing used. Ethiopian coffee beans are naturally processed; they are dried while the cherry fruit is still on the coffee bean. Thus, the coffee beans exhibit winery tomes, & they tend to have a greater acidity than coffee from other countries.

The medium roast can often provide the best balance between body, flavours, and acidity for Ethiopian coffee. However, you have to try out a bit to find that perfect roast since Ethiopian coffee beans are small & can be finicky, that makes it hard to roast them.

There are a myriad of Ethiopian coffee varieties. Ethiopian coffee is grown in specific areas in the country; Harar, Limu, and Yirgacheffe. The climatic and soil conditions of these areas differ, this changes the flavour of the coffee each area cultivates.

The coffee types are mostly sold under the areas that they are from.

These coffee types are Sidamo, Harar, and Genika.

Yirga Cheffe coffee is a washed, wet-processed coffee grown in & nearby to a small town in southern Ethiopia, named Yirgacheffe. The coffee is produced at altitudes inbetween 1700 & 2200 meters above sea level. Such elevations allow Yirgacheffe coffee to be classified as Strictly High growth (SHG).

Such altitudes slow the fast growth of coffee. Since the coffee plants grow at a reduced speed, they have more time to soak in all the nutrients in the soil. With the local climate, the Yirga Cheffe also contributes a significant influence; the fruit can develop a more robust flavour.

Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee is characterized by its light acidity & the clean & complex floral notes in its aroma. At times, the aroma might even exhibit a hint of coconut. Some Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee varieties have notes of citrus & tangerine.

Yirga Cheffe coffee is said to be the best coffee farmed in the south areas of Ethiopia and also holds its own alongside other coffee varieties from other locations.

Single origin coffee is coffee that is cultivated from a little & particular area in the world. Many coffee lovers do insist that a single coffee origin is, in fact, superior to other types of coffee as it is purer & more stable in flavour. This exclusivity makes single origin coffee more favouable.

Yirgacheffe Coffee is, in fact, single origin as it is only grown & processed in the Yirga Cheffe origin. That is the reason why it shows distinctive notes, aromas, and the feelings it induces.

Ethiopian coffee is Arabica. Ethiopia is the nation the coffee Arabica, which is the coffee plant, originates from. Now, it is produced in many parts worldwide, however Ethiopia still grows a lot of it. As mentioned earlier, Ethiopia farms 3 % of all the coffee globally, which is pretty significant.

Ethiopian Harrar coffee is a wild & exotic naturally processed variety of Arabica coffee. It is mostly farmed on botique farms found in the Oromia region, formally named Harrar. Therefore, the coffee is eponymous.

Sidamo coffee is an Ethiopian coffee variety produced exclusively in the Sidamo.

Sidamo is a big area in the fertile highlands in the Rift Valley. Sidamo is one of three trademarked coffee areas in Ethiopia (along with Harrar & Yirgacheffe). Sidamo coffee beans are known for their rich, full body and crisp acidity. They also have floral and citrus notes.

Ethiopian coffee has a mild and pleasant acidity, as well as a heavy winery and floral taste. The coffee also has a bright fruited taste. One is left with notes of blueberry, jasmine, and bergamot in the aftertaste.

The fruity tastes that characterise Ethiopian coffee can come across as sourness. This fact is proliferated when you switch to light coffee, like Ethiopian coffee, and you are used to the darker roasts.

It is strong. Even though Ethiopian coffee is so diverse, with so many different taste profiles, most of the coffee, especially from areas such as Sidamo & Limu, is complex and can prove strong, particually with nascent coffee connoisseurs.

This depends on the variety of Ethiopian coffee you are drinking. The coffee {farmed|grown in some locations in Ethiopia are more acidic than others, so you should check where the coffee is from. Ostensibly though, Ethiopian coffee shows mild acidity.

No, it does not. The vast majority of the Ethiopian coffee types are Coffee Arabica, that contains a coffee concentration of 1.5%. On the other hand, Robusta coffee, the strongest coffee beans, has a caffeine content of 2.4%. Therefore, Ethiopian coffee doesn’t have more caffeine than other types from different places in the world.
