FAQs

Ethiopian coffee beans are coffee beans that are farmed in Ethiopia. Ethiopia has a long history of coffee farming, one that dates back numerous centuries ago. It is home to one of the most well liked types of coffee, Coffea Arabica, also known as Arabica coffee.

Ethiopian coffee beans comprise 3 5 of the world coffee market. This clearly shows the importance that the Ethiopian coffee growing areas have on global coffee consumption.

It is believed that, about 1000 years ago, a goat herder stumbled upon the coffee plant in Kaffa. Thus, the birth place of coffee in Ethiopia is in Kaffa. Even the name is like Coffee.

Ethiopian coffee is known all over the globe for the quality of flavour and the level of perfection it has. However, why does Ethiopian coffee taste so good?

Ethiopian coffee, ostensibly, is known for its bright mouthfeels and the winery flavour & quality it comes with. The coffee beans from this region are typical of greater acidity and have complex flavour notes.

The major reason behind the taste that comes & is linked with Ethiopian coffee is the processing utilised. Ethiopian coffee beans are naturally processed; they are dried while the cherry fruit is still attached to the coffee bean. Thus, the coffee beans exhibit winery tomes, & they commonly have a greater acidity than coffee beans from other regions.

The medium roasting can often provide the best balance between body, flavours, & acidity for Ethiopian coffee. That being said, you can experiment a bit to find that perfect roast since Ethiopian coffee beans are small & can be finicky, that makes it difficult to roast them.

There are a multitude of Ethiopian coffee varieties. Ethiopian coffee is cultivated in specific regions in the country; Harar, Limu, and Yirgacheffe. The climatic & soil characteristics of these areas differ, which affects the flavour of the coffee each area cultivates.

The coffee types are mainly sold as the regions that they come from.

These coffee types are Sidamo, Harar, and Genika.

Yirgacheffe coffee is a cleaned, wet-processed coffee produced in & nearby to a small town in southern Ethiopia, named Yirgacheffe. The coffee is grown at elevations inbetween 1,700 & 2200 meters above sea level. Such elevations qualify Yirgacheffe coffee to be classified as Strictly High growth (SHG).

Such elevations hinder the fast growth of coffee. Since the coffee trees grow at a slower pace, they have increased time to soak in all the nutrients in the soil. With the local climate, the Yirgacheffe also contributes a large influence; the fruit can develop a more robust taste.

Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee is characterized by its light acidity and the clean and complex floral notes in its aroma. At times, the aroma might even exhibit a hint of coconut. Some Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee types have notes of citrus & tangerine.

Yirga Cheffe coffee is thought to be the best coffee grown in the southern part of Ethiopia & also holds its own against other coffee varieties from other locations.

Single-origin coffee is coffee that is farmed from a little & particular area in the world. Many coffee connoisseurs do think that a single origin coffee is, in fact, superior to other varieties of coffee because it is purer & more homogenous in taste. This exclusivity makes single origin coffee more desirable.

Yirgacheffe Coffee is, in fact, single source since it is only produced & prepared in the Yirgacheffe origin. Which is the reason why it has distinctive notes, aromas, and the feelings it induces.

Ethiopian coffee is Arabica. Ethiopia is the country the coffee Arabica, which is the coffee tree, originates from. Now, it is cultivated in numerous areas worldwide, but Ethiopia still produces a lot of it. As stated earlier, Ethiopia farms three percent of all the coffee globally, which is pretty big.

Ethiopian Harrar coffee is a wild & exotic naturally processed variety of Arabica coffee. It is mainly grown on botique farms situated in the Oromia area, formally named Harrar. Thus, the coffee is eponymous.

Sidamo coffee is an Ethiopian coffee variety produced exclusively in the Sidamo.

Sidamo is a big area in the fertile highlands in the Rift Valley. Sidamo is one of three trademarked coffee areas in Ethiopia (along with Harrar and Yirgacheffe). Sidamo coffee beans are known for their rich, full body and crisp acidity. They also have floral and citrus notes.

Ethiopian coffee has a mild and pleasant acidity, as well as a heavy winery and floral taste. The coffee also has a bright fruited taste. One is left with notes of blueberry, jasmine, and bergamot in the aftertaste.

The fruity flavours that characterise Ethiopian coffee can come across as sourness. This fact is proliferated when you switch to light coffee, like Ethiopian coffee, and you are used to the darker roasts.

It is strong. Even though Ethiopian coffee is so diverse, with so many different flavour varieties, most of the coffee, especially from areas like Sidamo & Limu, is complex and can prove strong, particually with nascent coffee lovers.

This depends on the variety of Ethiopian coffee you are consuming. The coffee {farmed|grown in some areas in Ethiopia can be more acidic than others, so you have to check where the coffee is from. Ostensibly though, Ethiopian coffee shows mild acidity.

No, it doesn’t. Most of the Ethiopian coffee types are Coffee Arabica, which has a coffee percentage of 1.5. On the other hand, Robusta, the strongest coffee beans, has a caffeine percentage of 2.4. Therefore, Ethiopian coffee does not contain more caffeine than other types from different locations in the world.
