FAQs
Ethiopian coffee beans are coffee beans that come from Ethiopia. Ethiopia has a long history of coffee bean cultivation, one that goes back a number of centuries ago. It is the origin to one of the most popular types of coffee, Coffea Arabica, commonly called as Arabica coffee.
Ethiopian coffee beans constitute three 5 of the global coffee farming. This clearly shows the influence that the Ethiopian coffee cultivation locations have on world coffee consumption.
It is thought that, about 1000 years ago, a goat herder stumbled on the coffee plant in Kaffa. Thus, the origin of coffee in Ethiopia is in Kaffa. Even the name is like Coffee.
Ethiopian coffee is known worldwide for the quality of taste & the level of refinement it comes with. However, why does Ethiopian coffee taste so good?
Ethiopian coffee, seemingly, is known for its bright mouthfeels and the winery flavour & quality it comes with. The coffee beans from this area are usually of higher acidity and have complex flavour notes.
The main cause of the flavour that comes & is linked with Ethiopian coffee is the processing used. Ethiopian coffee beans are processed naturally; they are dried while the cherry fruit is still attached to the coffee bean. Thus, the coffee beans show winery tomes, & they usually have a greater acidity than coffee beans from other regions.
A medium roast will result in the best balance between body, flavours, & acidity for Ethiopian coffee. That being said, you can experiment a bit to find that perfect roast since Ethiopian coffee beans are small & can be finicky, which can make it difficult to roast them.
There are a wide range of Ethiopian coffee types. Ethiopian coffee is grown in specific areas in the country; Harar, Limu, and Yirgacheffe. The climatic & soil characteristics of these regions are different, which changes the taste of the coffee each area cultures.
The coffee varieties are mainly marketed as the areas of their origin.
These coffee types are Sidamo, Harar, and Genika.
Yirga Cheffe coffee is a cleaned, wet-processed coffee cultivated in and around a little town in south Ethiopia, named Yirgacheffe. The coffee is at altitudes inbetween 1,700 and 2,200 meters ASL. Such elevations allow Yirgacheffe coffee to be classified as Strictly Hard Bean (SHB).
Such elevations hinder the rapid growth of coffee. Because the coffee plants grow at a reduced speed, they have increased time to soak in all the nutrients in the earth. With the local climate, the Yirga Cheffe also plays a large influence; the berries can develop a more robust taste.
Ethiopian Yirga Cheffe coffee is characterized by its light acidity & the clean and complex floral notes in its aroma. Sometimes, the aroma may even exhibit a hint of coconut. Some Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee types display notes of citrus and tangerine.
Yirgacheffe coffee is thought to be the best coffee produced in the southern region of Ethiopia and also holds its own against other coffee types from other areas.
Single-origin coffee is coffee that comes from a little & particular region in the world. Many coffee connoisseurs do believe that a single coffee origin is, in fact, better than other types of coffee because it is purer and more homogenous in taste. This exclusivity makes single-source coffee more appealing.
Yirgacheffe Coffee is, in fact, single source because it is only cultured & processed in the Yirga Cheffe area. Which is the reason why it exhibits distinctive notes, aromas, & the feelings it induces.
Ethiopian coffee is Arabica. Ethiopia is where the coffee Arabica, which is the coffee tree, comes from. Now, it is grown in numerous parts across the globe, but Ethiopia still farms a lot of it. As stated earlier, Ethiopia produces three percent of all the coffee globally, which is pretty significant.
Ethiopian Harrar coffee is a wild & exotic naturally processed variety of Arabica coffee. It is mostly cultivated on botique farms situated in the Oromia region, formally named Harrar. Thus, the coffee is eponymous.
Sidamo coffee is an Ethiopian coffee type produced exclusively in the Sidamo.
Sidamo is a large region in the fertile highlands in the Rift Valley. Sidamo is one of three trademarked coffee regions in Ethiopia (along with Harrar and Yirgacheffe). Sidamo coffee beans are known for their rich, full body and crisp acidity. They also have floral and citrus notes.
Ethiopian coffee has a mild and pleasant acidity, as well as a heavy winery and floral taste. The coffee also has a bright fruited taste. One is left with notes of blueberry, jasmine, and bergamot in the aftertaste.
The fruity flavours that characterise Ethiopian coffee can come across as sourness. This fact is proliferated when you switch to light coffee, like Ethiopian coffee, and you are used to the darker roasts.
It is strong. Even though Ethiopian coffee is so diverse, with a range of different taste profiles, a lot the coffee, particually from areas such as Sidamo & Limu, is complex & can prove strong, particually with nascent coffee drinkers.
This depends on the variety of Ethiopian coffee you are drinking. The coffee {farmed|grown in some areas in Ethiopia will prove to be more acidic than other types, so it is good to check where the coffee is from. Ostensibly though, Ethiopian coffee has mild acidity.
No, Ethiopian coffee does not. The vast majority of the Ethiopian coffee types are Arabica, which contains a coffee percentage of 1.5. On the other hand, Robusta, the strongest coffee beans, has a caffeine percentage of 2.4. Therefore, Ethiopian coffee doesn’t contain more caffeine than other types from other places in the world.
