FAQs

Ethiopian coffee beans are coffee beans that are cultivated in Ethiopia. Ethiopia has a decorated history of coffee production, one that dates back a number of centuries ago. It is the origin for one of the most preferred strains of coffee, Coffea Arabica, known as Arabica coffee.

Ethiopian coffee beans constitute three percent of the world coffee production. This clearly shows the importance that the Ethiopian coffee farming locations have on world coffee consumption.

It is believed that, about one thousand years ago, a goat herder stumbled on the coffee tree in Kaffa. Thus, the birth place of coffee in Ethiopia is in Kaffa. Even the name is similar to Coffee.

Ethiopian coffee is known all over the globe for the quality of flavour and the amount of perfection it has. However, why does Ethiopian coffee taste so great?

Ethiopian coffee, apparently, is known for its light mouthfeels & the winery taste and quality it comes with. The coffee beans from this area are commonly of higher acidity and come with complex tasting notes.

The main cause of the flavour that comes and is associated with Ethiopian coffee is the processing utilised. Ethiopian coffee beans are processed naturally; they are dried while the cherry fruit is still on the coffee bean. Therefore, the coffee beans develop winery tomes, & they usually have a higher acidity than coffee from other areas.

The medium roast will often give the best balance between body, flavours, & acidity for Ethiopian coffee. However, you can try out a bit to find that perfect roast since Ethiopian coffee beans are small & can be finicky, that makes it hard to roast them.

There are a wide range of Ethiopian coffee varieties. Ethiopian coffee is cultivated in specific areas in the country; Harar, Limu, and Yirgacheffe. The climatic and soil characteristics of these areas differ, which affects the flavour of the coffee each place cultures.

The coffee varieties are mainly sold under the locations that they are from.

These coffee types are Sidamo, Harar, and Genika.

Yirga Cheffe coffee is a cleaned, wet-processed coffee grown in and around a small town in southern Ethiopia, named Yirgacheffe. The coffee is cultured at altitudes inbetween 1,700 & 2200 meters ASL. Such elevations allow Yirgacheffe coffee to be classified as Strictly High growth (SHG).

Such elevations slow the rapid growth of coffee. Since the coffee plants grow at a slow rate, they have increased time to soak in all the nutrients in the earth. With the local climate, the Yirga Cheffe also contributes a huge role; the fruit can develop a more robust flavour.

Ethiopian Yirga Cheffe coffee is characterized by its bright acidity and the clean and complex floral notes in its aroma. At times, the aroma can even exhibit a hint of coconut. Some Ethiopian Yirga Cheffe coffee varieties exhibit notes of citrus & tangerine.

Yirgacheffe coffee is thought to be the best coffee produced in the south region of Ethiopia & also holds its own against other coffee varieties from other locations.

Single origin coffee is coffee that is produced from a little & particular region in the world. Most coffee lovers do insist that a single origin coffee is, in fact, superior to other varieties of coffee as it is purer & more homogenous in taste. This exclusivity makes single origin coffee more desirable.

Yirgacheffe Coffee is, in fact, single source as it is only produced & processed in the Yirgacheffe origin. That is the reason why it exhibits distinctive notes, aromas, and the feelings it induces.

Ethiopian coffee is Arabica. Ethiopia is where the coffee Arabica, which is the coffee plant, originates from. Now, it is cultivated in many regions worldwide, however Ethiopia still produces a lot of it. As stated before, Ethiopia grows 3 percent of all the coffee globally, which is pretty big.

Ethiopian Harrar coffee is a wild and exotic naturally processed variety of Arabica coffee. It is primarily produced on small farms located in the Oromia area, formally known as Harrar. Therefore, the coffee is eponymous.

Sidamo coffee is an Ethiopian coffee type farmed exclusively in the Sidamo.

Sidamo is a big region in the fertile highlands in the Rift Valley. Sidamo is one of three trademarked coffee regions in Ethiopia (also with Harrar & Yirgacheffe). Sidamo coffee beans are known for their rich, full body and crisp acidity. They also have floral and citrus notes.

Ethiopian coffee has a mild and pleasant acidity, as well as a heavy winery and floral taste. The coffee also has a bright fruited taste. One is left with notes of blueberry, jasmine, and bergamot in the aftertaste.

The fruity tastes that characterise Ethiopian coffee can come across as sourness. This fact is proliferated when you switch to light coffee, like Ethiopian coffee, and you are used to the darker roasts.

It is strong. Even though Ethiopian coffee is so diverse, with a lot of different taste varieties, a lot the coffee, particually from places such as Sidamo and Limu, is complex and can prove strong, particually with nascent coffee drinkers.

This depends on the type of Ethiopian coffee you are drinking. The coffee {farmed|grown in some areas in Ethiopia will prove to be more acidic than othervarieties, so you should check where the coffee is from. Ostensibly though, Ethiopian coffee has mild acidity.

No, it doesn’t. Most of the Ethiopian coffee types are Coffee Arabica, that has a coffee percentage of 1.5. On the Contrary, Robusta, the strongest bean, has a caffeine percentage of 2.4. Thus, Ethiopian coffee does not contain more caffeine than other types from other regions in the world.
