FAQs
Ethiopian coffee beans are coffee beans that are grown in Ethiopia. Ethiopia has a decorated history of coffee bean farming, one that goes back numerous centuries ago. It is home for one of the most preferred species of coffee, Coffea Arabica, commonly called as Arabica coffee.
Ethiopian coffee beans comprise 3 5 of the world coffee production. This clearly shows the importance that the Ethiopian coffee growing areas have on world coffee consumption.
It is thought that, about 1000 years ago, a goatherd stumbled on the coffee plant in Kaffa. Thus, the origin of coffee in Ethiopia is in Kaffa. Even what it is called is like Coffee.
Ethiopian coffee is known all over the globe for the quality of taste and the level of perfection it has. However, why does Ethiopian coffee taste so great?
Ethiopian coffee, apparently, is known for its bright mouthfeels & the winery taste and quality it comes with. The coffee beans from this area are commonly of greater acidity and come with complex tasting notes.
The major cause of the flavour that comes & has been associated with Ethiopian coffee is the process used. Ethiopian coffee beans are naturally processed; they are dried while the cherry fruit is still on the coffee bean. Therefore, the coffee beans show winery tomes, & they tend to have a greater acidity than coffee beans from other countries.
A medium roast can often result in the best balance between body, flavours, and acidity for Ethiopian coffee beans. That being said, you have to experiment a bit to get that perfect roast since Ethiopian coffee beans are small & may be finicky, which can make it difficult to roast them.
There are a multitude of Ethiopian coffee types. Ethiopian coffee is cultivated in specific regions in the country; Harar, Limu, and Yirgacheffe. The climatic & soil characteristics of these regions are different, which impacts the flavour of the coffee each place cultivates.
The coffee varieties are mostly sold as the regions that they come from.
These coffee types are Sidamo, Harar, and Genika.
Yirga Cheffe coffee is a cleaned, wet-processed coffee farmed in and around a small village in southern Ethiopia, named Yirgacheffe. The coffee is produced at altitudes inbetween 1,700 and 2,200 meters ASL. Such altitudes allow Yirga Cheffe coffee to be classified as Strictly Hard Bean (SHB).
Such elevations slow the rapid growth of coffee. Since the coffee plants grow at a slow pace, they have increased time to soak in all the nutrients in the soil. With the local climate, the Yirgacheffe also contributes a large role; the fruit can develop a more robust flavour.
Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee is characterized by its bright acidity and the clean and complex floral notes in its aroma. Sometimes, the aroma can even show a hint of coconut. Some Ethiopian Yirga Cheffe coffee types show notes of citrus & tangerine.
Yirgacheffe coffee is thought to be the best coffee grown in the southern region of Ethiopia & also holds its own against other coffee types from other areas.
Single-origin coffee is coffee that comes from a little and specific location in the world. Most coffee lovers do insist that a single origin coffee is, in fact, better than other types of coffee because it is purer & more homogenous in flavour. This exclusivity makes single origin coffee more appealing.
Yirga Cheffe Coffee is, in fact, single source as it is only grown & prepared in the Yirga Cheffe area. Which is the reason why it exhibits distinctive notes, aromas, & the feelings it induces.
Ethiopian coffee is Arabica. Ethiopia is the nation the coffee Arabica, which is the coffee tree, originates from. Now, it is cultivated in many regions worldwide, but Ethiopia still farms a lot of it. As stated before, Ethiopia grows three % of all the coffee in the world, which is pretty big.
Ethiopian Harrar coffee is a wild & exotic naturally processed variety of Arabica coffee. It is mainly produced on small farms situated in the Oromia area, formally called Harrar. Thus, the coffee is eponymous.
Sidamo coffee is an Ethiopian coffee type farmed exclusively in the Sidamo.
Sidamo is a large region in the fertile highlands in the Rift Valley. Sidamo is one of three trademarked coffee regions in Ethiopia (along with Harrar and Yirgacheffe). Sidamo coffee beans are known for their rich, full body and crisp acidity. They also have floral and citrus notes.
Ethiopian coffee has a mild and pleasant acidity, as well as a heavy winery and floral taste. The coffee also has a bright fruited taste. One is left with notes of blueberry, jasmine, and bergamot in the aftertaste.
The fruity flavours that characterise Ethiopian coffee can come across as sourness. This fact is proliferated when you switch to light coffee, like Ethiopian coffee, and you are used to the darker roasts.
It is strong. Even though Ethiopian coffee is so diverse, with so many different taste profiles, most of the coffee, particually from areas such as Sidamo and Limu, is complex & can prove strong, particually with nascent coffee drinkers.
This depends on the type of Ethiopian coffee you are drinking. The coffee {farmed|grown in some areas in Ethiopia will be more acidic than othervarieties, so it is good to check where the coffee is from. Ostensibly though, Ethiopian coffee has mild acidity.
No, Ethiopian coffee does not. Most of the Ethiopian coffee types are Coffee Arabica, that contains a coffee percentage of 1.5. On the other hand, Robusta, the strongest bean, contains a caffeine content of 2.4%. Therefore, Ethiopian beans does not contain more caffeine than other varieties from other regions in the world.
