FAQs
Ethiopian coffee beans are coffee beans that are grown in Ethiopia. Ethiopia has a long history of coffee farming, one that goes back numerous centuries ago. It is the origin to one of the most preferred strains of coffee, Coffea Arabica, commonly called as Arabica coffee.
Ethiopian coffee beans comprise three 5 of the world coffee farming. This clearly exhibits the influence that the Ethiopian coffee growing areas have on global coffee consumption.
It is believed that, about one thousand years ago, a goatherd stumbled on the coffee tree in Kaffa. Thus, the birth place of coffee in Ethiopia is in Kaffa. Even the name is like Coffee.
Ethiopian coffee is known all over the world for the quality of taste & the amount of perfection it has. That being said, why does Ethiopian coffee taste so great?
Ethiopian coffee, ostensibly, is known for its light mouthfeels and the winery taste & quality it comes with. The coffee beans from this area are typical of higher acidity & have complex flavour notes.
The main cause of the taste that comes & is linked with Ethiopian coffee is the process utilised. Ethiopian coffee beans are naturally processed; they are dried while the cherry fruit is still on the coffee bean. Therefore, the coffee beans show winery tomes, and they typically have a higher acidity than coffee from other regions.
A medium roast can often provide the best balance between body, flavours, & acidity for Ethiopian coffee. That being said, you can experiment a bit to get that perfect roast since Ethiopian coffee beans are small & may be finicky, which can make it hard to roast them.
There are a myriad of Ethiopian coffee varieties. Ethiopian coffee is cultured in particular regions in the country; Harar, Limu, and Yirgacheffe. The climatic and soil conditions of these places are different, this changes the flavour of the coffee each location cultures.
The coffee types are mainly marketed under the regions that they are from.
These coffee types are Sidamo, Harar, and Genika.
Yirgacheffe coffee is a washed, wet-processed coffee grown in & around a little town in south Ethiopia, called Yirgacheffe. The coffee is cultured at elevations inbetween 1700 and 2200 meters above sea level. Such elevations qualify Yirgacheffe coffee to be classified as Strictly Hard Bean (SHB).
Such elevations slow down the rapid growth of coffee. Since the coffee plants grow at a slow rate, they have increased time to soak in all the nutrients in the soil. With the local climate, the Yirga Cheffe also contributes a huge role; the fruit can develop a more robust flavour.
Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee is characterized by its bright acidity & the clean & complex floral notes in its aroma. At times, the aroma may even exhibit a hint of coconut. Some Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee types have notes of citrus and tangerine.
Yirgacheffe coffee is considered to be the best coffee cultivated in the south region of Ethiopia and also holds its own against other coffee varieties from other areas.
Single origin coffee is coffee that is grown from a small and specific region in the world. Most coffee lovers do believe that a single coffee origin is, in fact, better than other varieties of coffee as it is purer and more homogenous in taste. This exclusivity makes single origin coffee more favouable.
Yirgacheffe Coffee is, in fact, single source since it is only cultivated & processed in the Yirgacheffe region. Which is the reason why it shows distinctive notes, aromas, and the feelings it induces.
Ethiopian coffee is Arabica. Ethiopia is the nation the coffee Arabica, which is the coffee shrub, comes from. Now, it is cultured in numerous areas across the globe, however Ethiopia still produces a lot of it. As mentioned before, Ethiopia farms 3 percent of all the coffee globally, which is pretty big.
Ethiopian Harrar coffee is a wild & exotic naturally processed variety of Arabica coffee. It is mostly farmed on little farms found in the Oromia region, formally known as Harrar. Therefore, the coffee is eponymous.
Sidamo coffee is an Ethiopian coffee type cultured exclusively in the Sidamo.
Sidamo is a large area in the fertile highlands in the Rift Valley. Sidamo is one of three trademarked coffee areas in Ethiopia (along with Harrar and Yirgacheffe). Sidamo coffee beans are known for their rich, full body and crisp acidity. They also have floral and citrus notes.
Ethiopian coffee has a mild and pleasant acidity, as well as a heavy winery and floral taste. The coffee also has a bright fruited taste. One is left with notes of blueberry, jasmine, and bergamot in the aftertaste.
The fruity tastes that characterise Ethiopian coffee can come across as sourness. This fact is proliferated when you switch to light coffee, like Ethiopian coffee, and you are used to the darker roasts.
It is strong. Even though Ethiopian coffee is so diverse, with so many different flavour varieties, most of the coffee, particually from places like Sidamo & Limu, is complex and can prove strong, particually with nascent coffee lovers.
This depends on the variety of Ethiopian coffee you are drinking. The coffee {farmed|grown in some areas in Ethiopia will prove to be more acidic than othervarieties, so it is good to check where the coffee is from. Apparently though, Ethiopian coffee shows mild acidity.
No, Ethiopian coffee doesn’t. Most of the Ethiopian coffee types are Arabica, that has a coffee percentage of 1.5. On the other hand, Robusta, the strongest bean, has a caffeine percentage of 2.4. Thus, Ethiopian coffee does not contain more caffeine than other varieties from different locations in the world.
