FAQs
Ethiopian coffee beans are coffee beans that are farmed in Ethiopia. Ethiopia has a long history of coffee bean production, one that dates back a number of centuries ago. Ethiopia is home to one of the most preferred strains of coffee, Coffea Arabica, often termed as Arabica coffee.
Ethiopian coffee beans constitute three percent of the global coffee market. This clearly exhibits the influence that the Ethiopian coffee cultivation locations have on global coffee consumption.
It is believed that, about one thousand years ago, a goatherd happened on the coffee tree in Kaffa. Thus, the birth place of coffee in Ethiopia is in Kaffa. Even the name is like Coffee.
Ethiopian coffee is known all over the globe for the quality of flavour and the amount of perfection it comes with. However, why does Ethiopian coffee taste so great?
Ethiopian coffee, apparently, is known for its bright mouthfeels & the winery flavour & quality it has. The coffee beans from this area are usually of greater acidity & come with complex tasting notes.
The primary reason behind the flavour that comes & has been linked with Ethiopian coffee is the processing utilised. Ethiopian coffee beans are processed naturally; they are dried while the cherry fruit is still on the coffee bean. Thus, the coffee beans exhibit winery tomes, and they usually have a higher acidity than coffee from other areas.
A medium roast will result in the best balance between body, flavours, and acidity for Ethiopian coffee beans. That being said, you have to experiment a bit to get that perfect roast since Ethiopian coffee beans are small & can be finicky, that can make it difficult to roast them.
There are a multitude of Ethiopian coffee varieties. Ethiopian coffee is cultured in specific regions in the country; Harar, Limu, and Yirgacheffe. The climatic & soil characteristics of these places are different, this changes the taste of the coffee each area cultures.
The coffee varieties are mostly sold under the regions that they come from.
These coffee types are Sidamo, Harar, and Genika.
Yirga Cheffe coffee is a washed, wet-processed coffee cultivated in and nearby to a small town in south Ethiopia, named Yirgacheffe. The coffee is cultured at elevations inbetween 1,700 and 2200 meters ASL. Such altitudes allow Yirgacheffe coffee to be classified as Strictly Hard Bean (SHB).
Such altitudes slow down the fast growth of coffee. Since the coffee plants grow at a slower pace, they have more time to soak in all the nutrients in the soil. With the local climate, the Yirgacheffe also contributes a huge role; the berries can develop a more robust taste.
Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee is characterized by its bright acidity & the clean and complex floral notes in its aroma. At times, the aroma may even have a hint of coconut. Some Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee varieties display notes of citrus & tangerine.
Yirga Cheffe coffee is thought to be the best coffee grown in the southern areas of Ethiopia & also holds its own alongside other coffee varieties from other regions.
Single origin coffee is coffee that is farmed from a little & particular area in the world. Most coffee lovers do think that a single origin coffee is, in fact, better than other varieties of coffee because it is purer & more homogenous in taste. This exclusivity makes single origin coffee more appealing.
Yirgacheffe Coffee is, in fact, single source since it is only cultivated & processed in the Yirgacheffe area. That is the reason why it has distinctive notes, aromas, & the feelings it induces.
Ethiopian coffee is Arabica. Ethiopia is the country the coffee Arabica, which is the coffee plant, comes from. Now, it is grown in numerous areas worldwide, but Ethiopia still produces a lot of it. As mentioned before, Ethiopia grows three % of all the coffee in the world, which is pretty significant.
Ethiopian Harrar coffee is a wild and exotic naturally processed variety of Arabica coffee. It is mostly cultivated on botique farms found in the Oromia region, formally called Harrar. Therefore, the coffee is eponymous.
Sidamo coffee is an Ethiopian coffee variety cultured exclusively in the Sidamo.
Sidamo is a large region in the fertile highlands in the Rift Valley. Sidamo is one of three trademarked coffee areas in Ethiopia (along with Harrar and Yirgacheffe). Sidamo coffee beans are known for their rich, full body and crisp acidity. They also have floral and citrus notes.
Ethiopian coffee has a mild and pleasant acidity, as well as a heavy winery and floral taste. The coffee also has a bright fruited taste. One is left with notes of blueberry, jasmine, and bergamot in the aftertaste.
The fruity tastes that characterise Ethiopian coffee can come across as sourness. This fact is proliferated when you switch to light coffee, like Ethiopian coffee, and you are used to the darker roasts.
It is strong. Even though Ethiopian coffee is so diverse, with a lot of different flavour varieties, most of the coffee, particually from places such as Sidamo and Limu, is complex & can prove strong, particually with nascent coffee lovers.
This depends on the type of Ethiopian coffee you are drinking. The coffee {farmed|grown in some locations in Ethiopia can be more acidic than othervarieties, so it is good to check where the coffee is from. Apparently though, Ethiopian coffee shows mild acidity.
No, Ethiopian coffee doesn’t. Most of the Ethiopian coffee varieties are Arabica, that contains a coffee percentage of 1.5. On the Contrary, Robusta, the strongest coffee beans, has a caffeine content of 2.4%. Therefore, Ethiopian beans does not have more caffeine than other varieties from other areas in the world.
