FAQs
Ethiopian coffee beans are coffee beans that are cultivated in Ethiopia. Ethiopia has a long history of coffee cultivation, one that goes back numerous centuries ago. It is home to one of the most popular species of coffee, Coffea Arabica, known as Arabica coffee.
Ethiopian coffee beans constitute three 5 of the world coffee farming. This clearly exhibits the importance that the Ethiopian coffee cultivation locations have on world coffee consumption.
It is thought that, about 1000 years ago, a goat herder stumbled on the coffee plant in Kaffa. Thus, the birth place of coffee in Ethiopia is in Kaffa. Even the name is like Coffee.
Ethiopian coffee is known worldwide for the quality of taste & the amount of refinement it comes with. That being said, why does Ethiopian coffee taste so good?
Ethiopian coffee, seemingly, is known for its bright mouthfeels & the winery flavour and quality it comes with. The coffee beans from this region are commonly of higher acidity and have complex flavour notes.
The primary cause of the taste that comes and has been linked with Ethiopian coffee is the processing utilised. Ethiopian coffee beans are naturally processed; they are dried while the cherry fruit is still on the coffee bean. Thus, the coffee beans get winery tomes, and they usually have a increased acidity than coffee beans from other regions.
A medium roast can often provide the best balance between body, flavours, and acidity for Ethiopian coffee beans. That being said, you can try out a bit to get that perfect roast since Ethiopian coffee beans are small & may be finicky, that makes it difficult to roast them.
There are a multitude of Ethiopian coffee types. Ethiopian coffee is cultured in specific areas in the country; Harar, Limu, and Yirgacheffe. The climatic and soil conditions of these regions differ, which changes the flavour of the coffee each place produces.
The coffee varieties are mainly sold as the regions that they come from.
These coffee types are Sidamo, Harar, and Genika.
Yirgacheffe coffee is a cleaned, wet-processed coffee grown in and around a small town in south Ethiopia, named Yirgacheffe. The coffee is produced at altitudes inbetween 1700 & 2200 meters above sea level. Such altitudes qualify Yirgacheffe coffee to be classified as Strictly High growth (SHG).
Such altitudes slow down the fast growth of coffee. Because the coffee trees grow at a slow speed, they have increased time to soak in all the nutrients in the soil. With the local climate, the Yirga Cheffe also plays a large influence; the fruit can develop a more robust taste.
Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee is characterized by its bright acidity and the clean & complex floral notes in its aroma. Sometimes, the aroma might even have a hint of coconut. Some Ethiopian Yirga Cheffe coffee types have notes of citrus and tangerine.
Yirgacheffe coffee is said to be the best coffee farmed in the southern areas of Ethiopia and also holds its own alongside other coffee varieties from other areas.
Single origin coffee is coffee that is cultivated from a small and particular area in the world. Most coffee connoisseurs do insist that a single origin coffee is, in fact, superior to other types of coffee as it is purer and more homogenous in taste. This exclusivity makes single-source coffee more appealing.
Yirgacheffe Coffee is, in fact, single-origin as it is only farmed and prepared in the Yirga Cheffe region. Which is the reason why it has distinctive notes, aromas, & the feelings it induces.
Ethiopian coffee is Arabica. Ethiopia is the country the coffee Arabica, which is the coffee tree, originates from. Now, it is produced in many places worldwide, but Ethiopia still produces a lot of it. As stated before, Ethiopia farms three percent of all the coffee in the world, which is pretty significant.
Ethiopian Harrar coffee is a wild & exotic naturally processed variety of Arabica coffee. It is mostly cultivated on little farms situated in the Oromia region, formally known as Harrar. Therefore, the coffee is eponymous.
Sidamo coffee is an Ethiopian coffee type farmed exclusively in the Sidamo.
Sidamo is a large region in the fertile highlands in the Rift Valley. Sidamo is one of three trademarked coffee areas in Ethiopia (along with Harrar & Yirgacheffe). Sidamo coffee beans are known for their rich, full body and crisp acidity. They also have floral and citrus notes.
Ethiopian coffee has a mild and pleasant acidity, as well as a heavy winery and floral taste. The coffee also has a bright fruited taste. One is left with notes of blueberry, jasmine, and bergamot in the aftertaste.
The fruity tastes that characterise Ethiopian coffee can come across as sourness. This fact is proliferated when you switch to light coffee, like Ethiopian coffee, and you are used to the darker roasts.
It is strong. Even though Ethiopian coffee is so diverse, with a range of different flavour varieties, most of the coffee, especially from areas like Sidamo and Limu, is complex & can prove strong, especially with nascent coffee lovers.
This will depend on the type of Ethiopian coffee you are consuming. The coffee {farmed|grown in some areas in Ethiopia will be more acidic than others, so you should check where the coffee is from. Ostensibly though, Ethiopian coffee is of mild acidity.
No, it doesn’t. The vast majority of the Ethiopian coffee varieties are Arabica, which has a coffee concentration of 1.5%. On the other hand, Robusta, the strongest bean, has a caffeine content of 2.4%. Therefore, Ethiopian coffee beans does not contain more caffeine than other varieties from other areas in the world.
