FAQs
Ethiopian coffee beans are coffee beans that are grown in Ethiopia. Ethiopia has a long history of coffee farming, one that dates back numerous centuries ago. It is home for one of the most popular strains of coffee, Coffea Arabica, also known as Arabica coffee.
Ethiopian coffee beans make up three percent of the global coffee production. This clearly exhibits the importance that the Ethiopian coffee growing regions have on global coffee consumption.
It is thought that, about 1000 years ago, a goatherd happened upon the coffee plant in Kaffa. Thus, the birth place of coffee in Ethiopia is in Kaffa. Even the name is like Coffee.
Ethiopian coffee is known worldwide for the quality of taste and the level of refinement it has. That being said, why does Ethiopian coffee taste so great?
Ethiopian coffee, primarily, is known for its light mouthfeels and the winery taste & quality it has. The coffee beans from this area are usually of higher acidity and have complex tasting notes.
The main cause of the flavour that comes & has been associated with Ethiopian coffee is the processing utilised. Ethiopian coffee beans are naturally processed; they are dried while the cherry fruit is still on the coffee bean. Therefore, the coffee beans get winery tomes, & they typically have a greater acidity than coffee from other areas.
A medium roast will often result in the best balance between body, flavours, and acidity for Ethiopian coffee. That being said, you can experiment a bit to get that perfect roast since Ethiopian coffee beans are small & may be finicky, that can make it hard to roast them.
There are a lot of Ethiopian coffee varieties. Ethiopian coffee is grown in specific regions in the country; Harar, Limu, and Yirgacheffe. The climatic and soil conditions of these regions are different, which affects the flavour of the coffee each area cultivates.
The coffee varieties are mainly marketed as the areas that they come from.
These coffee types are Sidamo, Harar, and Genika.
Yirgacheffe coffee is a washed, wet-processed coffee produced in and around a little village in south Ethiopia, called Yirgacheffe. The coffee is cultured at elevations of between 1700 & 2200 meters above sea level. Such altitudes qualify Yirga Cheffe coffee to be classified as Strictly High growth (SHG).
Such altitudes hinder the fast growth of coffee. Because the coffee trees grow at a slow rate, they have more time to soak in all the nutrients in the earth. With the local climate, the Yirgacheffe also plays a large role; the fruit can develop a more robust taste.
Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee is characterized by its light acidity and the clean & complex floral notes in its aroma. Sometimes, the aroma may even have a hint of coconut. Some Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee varieties show notes of citrus and tangerine.
Yirgacheffe coffee is thought to be the best coffee produced in the southern part of Ethiopia & also holds its own alongside other coffee types from other regions.
Single-origin coffee is coffee that is grown from a little & specific region in the world. Most coffee lovers do believe that a single coffee origin is, in fact, superior to other types of coffee as it is purer and more homogenous in taste. This exclusivity makes single origin coffee more favouable.
Yirgacheffe Coffee is, in fact, single-origin since it is only farmed & processed in the Yirgacheffe area. Which is the reason why it exhibits distinctive notes, aromas, and the feelings it induces.
Ethiopian coffee is Arabica. Ethiopia is the nation the coffee Arabica, which is the coffee tree, originates from. Now, it is produced in many places across the globe, however Ethiopia still farms a lot of it. As mentioned earlier, Ethiopia produces 3 % of all the coffee in the world, which is pretty significant.
Ethiopian Harrar coffee is a wild & exotic naturally processed variety of Arabica coffee. It is mainly grown on little farms located in the Oromia area, formally called Harrar. Therefore, the coffee is eponymous.
Sidamo coffee is an Ethiopian coffee variety farmed exclusively in the Sidamo.
Sidamo is a big area in the fertile highlands in the Rift Valley. Sidamo is one of three trademarked coffee regions in Ethiopia (along with Harrar & Yirgacheffe). Sidamo coffee beans are known for their rich, full body and crisp acidity. They also have floral and citrus notes.
Ethiopian coffee has a mild and pleasant acidity, as well as a heavy winery and floral taste. The coffee also has a bright fruited taste. One is left with notes of blueberry, jasmine, and bergamot in the aftertaste.
The fruity tastes that characterise Ethiopian coffee can come across as sourness. This fact is proliferated when you switch to light coffee, like Ethiopian coffee, and you are used to the darker roasts.
It is strong. Even though Ethiopian coffee is so diverse, with many different flavour profiles, most of the coffee, particually from areas such as Sidamo & Limu, is complex & can prove strong, especially with nascent coffee lovers.
This will depend on the type of Ethiopian coffee you are drinking. The coffee {farmed|grown in some areas in Ethiopia will be more acidic than other types, so you have to check where the coffee is from. Ostensibly though, Ethiopian coffee is of mild acidity.
No, Ethiopian coffee beans doesn’t. Almost all of the Ethiopian coffee types are Arabica, that contains a coffee percentage of 1.5. On the Contrary, Robusta, the strongest coffee beans, contains a caffeine percentage of 2.4. Thus, Ethiopian beans doesn’t have more caffeine than other types from different areas in the world.
