FAQs
Ethiopian coffee beans are coffee beans that are grown in Ethiopia. Ethiopia has a long history of coffee cultivation, one that goes back a number of centuries ago. Ethiopia is the origin to one of the most well liked species of coffee, Coffea Arabica, known as Arabica coffee.
Ethiopian coffee beans total 3 percent of the world coffee production. This clearly shows the importance that the Ethiopian coffee production regions have on global coffee consumption.
It is believed that, about 1000 years ago, a goatherd happened upon the coffee tree in Kaffa. Thus, the origin of coffee in Ethiopia is in Kaffa. Even what it is called is similar to Coffee.
Ethiopian coffee is known all over the world for the quality of taste & the amount of refinement it comes with. That being said, why does Ethiopian coffee taste so great?
Ethiopian coffee, apparently, is known for its light mouthfeels and the winery flavour and quality it has. The coffee beans from this region are usually of greater acidity & come with complex tasting notes.
The primary cause of the taste that comes and has been linked with Ethiopian coffee is the process used. Ethiopian coffee beans are processed naturally; they are dried while the cherry fruit is still on the coffee bean. Thus, the coffee beans develop winery tomes, & they tend to have a higher acidity than coffee from other areas.
The medium roasting will often result in the best balance between body, flavours, and acidity for Ethiopian coffee beans. However, you have to experiment a bit to get that perfect roast since Ethiopian coffee beans are small & may be finicky, which can make it difficult to roast them.
There are a lot of Ethiopian coffee varieties. Ethiopian coffee is cultured in particular locations in the country; Harar, Limu, and Yirgacheffe. The climatic & soil conditions of these areas differ, which affects the taste of the coffee each region grows.
The coffee varieties are mostly sold as the locations that they come from.
These coffee types are Sidamo, Harar, and Genika.
Yirga Cheffe coffee is a washed, wet-processed coffee produced in & around a small town in south Ethiopia, called Yirgacheffe. The coffee is cultivated at altitudes inbetween 1,700 & 2200 meters above sea level. Such altitudes qualify Yirga Cheffe coffee to be classified as Strictly Hard Bean (SHB).
Such altitudes slow down the fast growth of coffee. Since the coffee plants grow at a slower rate, they have increased time to soak in all the nutrients in the earth. With the local climate, the Yirgacheffe also plays a large influence; the berries can develop a more robust flavour.
Ethiopian Yirga Cheffe coffee is characterized by its bright acidity and the clean & complex floral notes in its aroma. At times, the aroma might even show a hint of coconut. Some Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee types exhibit notes of citrus & tangerine.
Yirgacheffe coffee is considered to be the best coffee produced in the south region of Ethiopia & also holds its own alongside other coffee types from other areas.
Single-origin coffee is coffee that is grown from a small & specific location in the world. Many coffee connoisseurs do believe that a single origin coffee is, in fact, better than other varieties of coffee as it is purer and more stable in taste. This exclusivity makes single origin coffee more desirable.
Yirgacheffe Coffee is, in fact, single-origin as it is only farmed and processed in the Yirgacheffe region. That is the reason why it exhibits distinctive notes, aromas, and the feelings it induces.
Ethiopian coffee is Arabica. Ethiopia is where the coffee Arabica, which is the coffee plant, originates from. Now, it is cultured in many areas worldwide, however Ethiopia still produces a lot of it. As mentioned before, Ethiopia farms three percent of all the coffee in the world, which is pretty significant.
Ethiopian Harrar coffee is a wild & exotic naturally processed variety of Arabica coffee. It is primarily produced on botique farms situated in the Oromia area, formally known as Harrar. Thus, the coffee is eponymous.
Sidamo coffee is an Ethiopian coffee variety farmed exclusively in the Sidamo.
Sidamo is a big region in the fertile highlands in the Rift Valley. Sidamo is one of three trademarked coffee regions in Ethiopia (also with Harrar and Yirgacheffe). Sidamo coffee beans are known for their rich, full body and crisp acidity. They also have floral and citrus notes.
Ethiopian coffee has a mild and pleasant acidity, as well as a heavy winery and floral taste. The coffee also has a bright fruited taste. One is left with notes of blueberry, jasmine, and bergamot in the aftertaste.
The fruity flavours that characterise Ethiopian coffee can come across as sourness. This fact is proliferated when you switch to light coffee, like Ethiopian coffee, and you are used to the darker roasts.
It is strong. Even though Ethiopian coffee is so diverse, with so many different taste profiles, most of the coffee, especially from regions like Sidamo and Limu, is complex and can prove strong, particually with nascent coffee lovers.
This will depend on the type of Ethiopian coffee you are consuming. The coffee {farmed|grown in some areas in Ethiopia can be more acidic than others, so it is good to check where the coffee is from. Ostensibly though, Ethiopian coffee has mild acidity.
No, Ethiopian coffee doesn’t. Most of the Ethiopian coffee varieties are Arabica, that has a coffee percentage of 1.5. On the other hand, Robusta coffee, the strongest bean, has a caffeine content of 2.4%. Therefore, Ethiopian coffee beans doesn’t have more caffeine than other types from other areas in the world.
