FAQs

Ethiopian coffee beans are coffee beans that are farmed in Ethiopia. Ethiopia has a long history of coffee bean farming, one that dates back numerous centuries ago. It is home for one of the most popular types of coffee, Coffea Arabica, commonly called as Arabica coffee.

Ethiopian coffee beans comprise three 5 of the world coffee market. This clearly exhibits the importance that the Ethiopian coffee production regions have on world coffee consumption.

It is thought that, about one thousand years ago, a goat herder happened on the coffee plant in Kaffa. Thus, the origin of coffee in Ethiopia is in Kaffa. Even the name is similar to Coffee.

Ethiopian coffee is known all over the world for the quality of taste & the level of perfection it has. That being said, why does Ethiopian coffee taste so great?

Ethiopian coffee, apparently, is known for its bright mouthfeels and the winery taste & quality it comes with. The coffee beans from this area are typical of higher acidity and have complex tasting notes.

The main cause of the taste that comes & is associated with Ethiopian coffee is the processing utilised. Ethiopian coffee beans are naturally processed; they are dried while the cherry fruit is still attached to the coffee bean. Therefore, the coffee beans get winery tomes, & they tend to have a greater acidity than coffee beans from other areas.

A medium roast will result in the best balance between body, flavours, & acidity for Ethiopian coffee beans. That being said, you can try out a bit to get that perfect roast since Ethiopian coffee beans are small & may be finicky, that can make it hard to roast them.

There are a myriad of Ethiopian coffee types. Ethiopian coffee is cultured in specific locations in the country; Harar, Limu, and Yirgacheffe. The climatic & soil conditions of these locations are different, this affects the flavour of the coffee each area cultures.

The coffee types are mainly sold as the locations that they come from.

These coffee types are Sidamo, Harar, and Genika.

Yirga Cheffe coffee is a cleaned, wet-processed coffee grown in & nearby to a small village in southern Ethiopia, called Yirgacheffe. The coffee is at altitudes inbetween 1700 & 2,200 meters ASL. Such altitudes allow Yirga Cheffe coffee to be classified as Strictly Hard Bean (SHB).

Such elevations hinder the fast growth of coffee. Since the coffee trees grow at a reduced pace, they have more time to soak in all the nutrients in the soil. With the local climate, the Yirgacheffe also plays a huge influence; the fruit can develop a more robust flavour.

Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee is characterized by its light acidity & the clean and complex floral notes in its aroma. At times, the aroma might even have a hint of coconut. Some Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee varieties show notes of citrus and tangerine.

Yirga Cheffe coffee is thought to be the best coffee farmed in the southern part of Ethiopia and also holds its own alongside other coffee varieties from other areas.

Single-origin coffee is coffee that comes from a little and specific area in the world. Many coffee connoisseurs do believe that a single origin coffee is, in fact, superior to other types of coffee because it is purer and more homogenous in taste. This exclusivity makes single-source coffee more desirable.

Yirga Cheffe Coffee is, in fact, single source because it is only farmed & processed in the Yirgacheffe origin. Which is the reason why it has distinctive notes, aromas, and the feelings it induces.

Ethiopian coffee is Arabica. Ethiopia is where the coffee Arabica, which is the coffee shrub, originates from. Now, it is cultivated in numerous countries worldwide, however Ethiopia still farms a lot of it. As mentioned earlier, Ethiopia farms 3 percent of all the coffee globally, which is pretty significant.

Ethiopian Harrar coffee is a wild & exotic naturally processed variety of Arabica coffee. It is primarily cultivated on small farms located in the Oromia area, formally known as Harrar. Thus, the coffee is eponymous.

Sidamo coffee is an Ethiopian coffee variety cultivated exclusively in the Sidamo.

Sidamo is a large area in the fertile highlands in the Rift Valley. Sidamo is one of three trademarked coffee areas in Ethiopia (also with Harrar & Yirgacheffe). Sidamo coffee beans are known for their rich, full body and crisp acidity. They also have floral and citrus notes.

Ethiopian coffee has a mild and pleasant acidity, as well as a heavy winery and floral taste. The coffee also has a bright fruited taste. One is left with notes of blueberry, jasmine, and bergamot in the aftertaste.

The fruity flavours that characterise Ethiopian coffee can come across as sourness. This fact is proliferated when you switch to light coffee, like Ethiopian coffee, and you are used to the darker roasts.

It is strong. Even though Ethiopian coffee is so diverse, with many different flavour varieties, a lot the coffee, particually from areas like Sidamo & Limu, is complex & can prove strong, particually with nascent coffee drinkers.

This will depend on the type of Ethiopian coffee you are consuming. The coffee {farmed|grown in some areas in Ethiopia can be more acidic than other types, so it is good to check where the coffee is from. Apparently though, Ethiopian coffee has mild acidity.

No, Ethiopian coffee does not. The vast majority of the Ethiopian coffee types are Coffee Arabica, that contains a coffee percentage of 1.5. On the other hand, Robusta, the strongest coffee, contains a caffeine percentage of 2.4. Therefore, Ethiopian coffee doesn’t have more caffeine than other varieties from different regions in the world.
