FAQs
Ethiopian coffee beans are coffee beans that originate from Ethiopia. Ethiopia has a long history of coffee bean farming, one that goes back a number of centuries ago. It is the origin for one of the most popular strains of coffee, Coffea Arabica, commonly called as Arabica coffee.
Ethiopian coffee beans comprise 3 5 of the global coffee production. This clearly exhibits the influence that the Ethiopian coffee production regions have on world coffee consumption.
It is thought that, about 1000 years ago, a goat herder stumbled upon the coffee tree in Kaffa. Thus, the birth place of coffee in Ethiopia is in Kaffa. Even the name is like Coffee.
Ethiopian coffee is known worldwide for the quality of taste & the amount of refinement it has. However, why does Ethiopian coffee taste so good?
Ethiopian coffee, seemingly, is known for its light mouthfeels & the winery flavour and quality it has. The coffee beans from this area are commonly of greater acidity and have complex tasting notes.
The major reason behind the taste that comes & is associated with Ethiopian coffee is the process used. Ethiopian coffee beans are processed naturally; they are dried while the cherry fruit is still on the coffee bean. Therefore, the coffee beans exhibit winery tomes, & they commonly have a higher acidity than coffee from other countries.
The medium roast can often give the best balance between body, flavours, and acidity for Ethiopian coffee. However, you can try out a bit to get that perfect roast since Ethiopian coffee beans are small & may be finicky, that can make it hard to roast them.
There are a multitude of Ethiopian coffee types. Ethiopian coffee is cultivated in particular locations in the country; Harar, Limu, and Yirgacheffe. The climatic & soil characteristics of these locations are different, this affects the flavour of the coffee each area cultures.
The coffee varieties are mainly marketed under the regions of their origin.
These coffee types are Sidamo, Harar, and Genika.
Yirgacheffe coffee is a cleaned, wet-processed coffee cultivated in & around a small town in southern Ethiopia, named Yirgacheffe. The coffee is cultivated at altitudes of between 1700 & 2200 meters ASL. Such elevations qualify Yirga Cheffe coffee to be classified as Strictly Hard Bean (SHB).
Such elevations slow the fast growth of coffee. Since the coffee trees grow at a reduced speed, they have more time to soak in all the nutrients in the soil. With the local climate, the Yirgacheffe also plays a huge role; the berries can develop a more robust flavour.
Ethiopian Yirga Cheffe coffee is characterized by its light acidity and the clean and complex floral notes in its aroma. Sometimes, the aroma might even have a hint of coconut. Some Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee varieties exhibit notes of citrus & tangerine.
Yirgacheffe coffee is considered to be the best coffee produced in the south areas of Ethiopia and also holds its own against other coffee varieties from other regions.
Single-origin coffee is coffee that comes from a little & specific area in the world. Most coffee connoisseurs do believe that a single origin coffee is, in fact, superior to other types of coffee as it is purer & more homogenous in taste. This exclusivity makes single origin coffee more desirable.
Yirgacheffe Coffee is, in fact, single source because it is only produced & prepared in the Yirgacheffe origin. That is the reason why it exhibits distinctive notes, aromas, & the feelings it induces.
Ethiopian coffee is Arabica. Ethiopia is the nation the coffee Arabica, which is the coffee shrub, originates from. Now, it is farmed in many countries worldwide, but Ethiopia still produces a lot of it. As mentioned earlier, Ethiopia farms 3 percent of all the coffee globally, which is pretty significant.
Ethiopian Harrar coffee is a wild & exotic naturally processed variety of Arabica coffee. It is primarily produced on little farms found in the Oromia region, formally called Harrar. Therefore, the coffee is eponymous.
Sidamo coffee is an Ethiopian coffee variety cultivated exclusively in the Sidamo.
Sidamo is a big area in the fertile highlands in the Rift Valley. Sidamo is one of three trademarked coffee regions in Ethiopia (also with Harrar and Yirgacheffe). Sidamo coffee beans are known for their rich, full body and crisp acidity. They also have floral and citrus notes.
Ethiopian coffee has a mild and pleasant acidity, as well as a heavy winery and floral taste. The coffee also has a bright fruited taste. One is left with notes of blueberry, jasmine, and bergamot in the aftertaste.
The fruity tastes that characterise Ethiopian coffee can come across as sourness. This fact is proliferated when you switch to light coffee, like Ethiopian coffee, and you are used to the darker roasts.
It is strong. Even though Ethiopian coffee is so diverse, with a range of different flavour varieties, a lot the coffee, particually from places such as Sidamo & Limu, is complex & can prove strong, especially with nascent coffee connoisseurs.
This depends on the variety of Ethiopian coffee you are drinking. The coffee {farmed|grown in some areas in Ethiopia can be more acidic than othervarieties, so you have to check where the coffee is from. Apparently though, Ethiopian coffee has mild acidity.
No, Ethiopian coffee beans doesn’t. The vast majority of the Ethiopian coffee types are Arabica, which has a coffee percentage of 1.5. On the Contrary, Robusta coffee, the strongest bean, has a caffeine percentage of 2.4. Therefore, Ethiopian coffee does not contain more caffeine than other varieties from other regions in the world.
