FAQs

Ethiopian coffee beans are coffee beans that come from Ethiopia. Ethiopia has a extended history of coffee bean farming, one that goes back a number of centuries ago. Ethiopia is the origin to one of the most preferred types of coffee, Coffea Arabica, known as Arabica coffee.

Ethiopian coffee beans total three percent of the world coffee production. This clearly shows the importance that the Ethiopian coffee cultivation areas have on world coffee consumption.

It is believed that, about 1000 years ago, a goatherd stumbled upon the coffee plant in Kaffa. Thus, the origin of coffee in Ethiopia is in Kaffa. Even the name is like Coffee.

Ethiopian coffee is known worldwide for the quality of taste and the amount of refinement it comes with. That being said, why does Ethiopian coffee taste so good?

Ethiopian coffee, ostensibly, is known for its light mouthfeels & the winery flavour & quality it comes with. The coffee beans from this area are typical of higher acidity & have complex tasting notes.

The main reason behind the taste that comes and is associated with Ethiopian coffee is the processing utilised. Ethiopian coffee beans are naturally processed; they are dried while the cherry fruit is still attached to the coffee bean. Therefore, the coffee beans develop winery tomes, & they typically have a greater acidity than coffee beans from other countries.

The medium roasting can often result in the best balance between body, flavours, and acidity for Ethiopian coffee. That being said, you can experiment a bit to find that perfect roast since Ethiopian coffee beans are small & can be finicky, which can make it difficult to roast them.

There are a lot of Ethiopian coffee varieties. Ethiopian coffee is cultured in specific locations in the country; Harar, Limu, and Yirgacheffe. The climatic & soil characteristics of these locations differ, this affects the taste of the coffee each region farms.

The coffee varieties are mainly sold under the locations that they come from.

These coffee types are Sidamo, Harar, and Genika.

Yirgacheffe coffee is a washed, wet-processed coffee grown in & around a small village in south Ethiopia, called Yirgacheffe. The coffee is produced at altitudes of between 1,700 & 2200 meters above sea level. Such altitudes qualify Yirga Cheffe coffee to be classified as Strictly High growth (SHG).

Such altitudes hinder the fast growth of coffee. Since the coffee trees grow at a reduced speed, they have more time to soak in all the nutrients in the earth. With the local climate, the Yirga Cheffe also contributes a significant influence; the berries can develop a more robust taste.

Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee is characterized by its light acidity and the clean & complex floral notes in its aroma. At times, the aroma might even exhibit a hint of coconut. Some Ethiopian Yirga Cheffe coffee types display notes of citrus and tangerine.

Yirga Cheffe coffee is thought to be the best coffee farmed in the south region of Ethiopia and also holds its own against other coffee varieties from other locations.

Single-origin coffee is coffee that is cultivated from a small and particular region in the world. Most coffee lovers do believe that a single coffee origin is, in fact, better than other types of coffee because it is purer & more consistent in flavour. This exclusivity makes single origin coffee more favouable.

Yirga Cheffe Coffee is, in fact, single origin since it is only grown and prepared in the Yirgacheffe area. That is the reason why it exhibits distinctive notes, aromas, and the feelings it induces.

Ethiopian coffee is Arabica. Ethiopia is the country the coffee Arabica, which is the coffee tree, comes from. Now, it is cultivated in many places across the globe, but Ethiopia still grows a lot of it. As stated before, Ethiopia produces 3 percent of all the coffee globally, which is pretty big.

Ethiopian Harrar coffee is a wild and exotic naturally processed variety of Arabica coffee. It is mostly cultivated on small farms found in the Oromia region, formally called Harrar. Thus, the coffee is eponymous.

Sidamo coffee is an Ethiopian coffee variety grown exclusively in the Sidamo.

Sidamo is a large region in the fertile highlands in the Rift Valley. Sidamo is one of three trademarked coffee areas in Ethiopia (also with Harrar and Yirgacheffe). Sidamo coffee beans are known for their rich, full body and crisp acidity. They also have floral and citrus notes.

Ethiopian coffee has a mild and pleasant acidity, as well as a heavy winery and floral taste. The coffee also has a bright fruited taste. One is left with notes of blueberry, jasmine, and bergamot in the aftertaste.

The fruity tastes that characterise Ethiopian coffee can come across as sourness. This fact is proliferated when you switch to light coffee, like Ethiopian coffee, and you are used to the darker roasts.

It is strong. Even though Ethiopian coffee is so diverse, with a range of different taste profiles, a lot the coffee, especially from areas such as Sidamo & Limu, is complex and can prove strong, especially with nascent coffee connoisseurs.

This will depend on the variety of Ethiopian coffee you are consuming. The coffee {farmed|grown in some areas in Ethiopia will prove to be more acidic than othervarieties, so it is good to check where the coffee is from. Ostensibly though, Ethiopian coffee has mild acidity.

No, it does not. The vast majority of the Ethiopian coffee varieties are Arabica, which has a coffee concentration of 1.5%. On the other hand, Robusta, the strongest coffee beans, has a caffeine content of 2.4%. Thus, Ethiopian coffee does not have more caffeine than other varieties from other regions in the world.
