FAQs
Ethiopian coffee beans are coffee beans that are farmed in Ethiopia. Ethiopia has a decorated history of coffee production, one that dates back a number of centuries ago. It is home for one of the most popular types of coffee, Coffea Arabica, commonly called as Arabica coffee.
Ethiopian coffee beans total 3 5 of the world coffee production. This clearly shows the importance that the Ethiopian coffee growing locations have on world coffee consumption.
It is thought that, about one thousand years ago, a goat herder happened on the coffee plant in Kaffa. Thus, the birth place of coffee in Ethiopia is in Kaffa. Even the name is similar to Coffee.
Ethiopian coffee is known worldwide for the quality of taste & the level of refinement it has. That being said, why does Ethiopian coffee taste so good?
Ethiopian coffee, apparently, is known for its light mouthfeels and the winery flavour and quality it has. The coffee beans from this region are usually of greater acidity & have complex flavour notes.
The main cause of the flavour that comes and has been associated with Ethiopian coffee is the process used. Ethiopian coffee beans are processed naturally; they are dried while the cherry fruit is still attached to the coffee bean. Therefore, the coffee beans exhibit winery tomes, & they usually have a greater acidity than coffee beans from other areas.
A medium roasting can often provide the best balance between body, flavours, & acidity for Ethiopian coffee beans. That being said, you have to experiment a bit to get that perfect roast since Ethiopian coffee beans are small and may be finicky, that makes it hard to roast them.
There are a lot of Ethiopian coffee varieties. Ethiopian coffee is grown in particular regions in the country; Harar, Limu, and Yirgacheffe. The climatic and soil characteristics of these places are different, this changes the taste of the coffee each region cultures.
The coffee varieties are mostly sold under the areas that they come from.
These coffee types are Sidamo, Harar, and Genika.
Yirga Cheffe coffee is a cleaned, wet-processed coffee grown in and around a little village in southern Ethiopia, called Yirgacheffe. The coffee is produced at elevations of between 1,700 and 2,200 meters above sea level. Such altitudes qualify Yirgacheffe coffee to be classified as Strictly Hard Bean (SHB).
Such elevations hinder the fast growth of coffee. Since the coffee plants grow at a slow rate, they have more time to soak in all the nutrients in the earth. With the local climate, the Yirgacheffe also plays a important role; the berries can develop a more robust taste.
Ethiopian Yirga Cheffe coffee is characterized by its light acidity and the clean and complex floral notes in its aroma. At times, the aroma may even show a hint of coconut. Some Ethiopian Yirga Cheffe coffee types display notes of citrus & tangerine.
Yirga Cheffe coffee is considered to be the best coffee produced in the southern areas of Ethiopia & also holds its own against other coffee types from other regions.
Single origin coffee is coffee that is farmed from a small and specific location in the world. Most coffee connoisseurs do insist that a single coffee origin is, in fact, better than other types of coffee because it is purer & more consistent in flavour. This exclusivity makes single-source coffee more favouable.
Yirga Cheffe Coffee is, in fact, single-origin as it is only farmed and prepared in the Yirgacheffe origin. Which is the reason why it exhibits distinctive notes, aromas, and the feelings it induces.
Ethiopian coffee is Arabica. Ethiopia is the nation the coffee Arabica, which is the coffee shrub, comes from. Now, it is cultured in many countries worldwide, but Ethiopia still farms a lot of it. As stated earlier, Ethiopia produces three % of all the coffee globally, which is pretty big.
Ethiopian Harrar coffee is a wild and exotic naturally processed variety of Arabica coffee. It is mostly produced on little farms located in the Oromia region, formally named Harrar. Therefore, the coffee is eponymous.
Sidamo coffee is an Ethiopian coffee variety cultured exclusively in the Sidamo.
Sidamo is a big area in the fertile highlands in the Rift Valley. Sidamo is one of three trademarked coffee areas in Ethiopia (along with Harrar & Yirgacheffe). Sidamo coffee beans are known for their rich, full body and crisp acidity. They also have floral and citrus notes.
Ethiopian coffee has a mild and pleasant acidity, as well as a heavy winery and floral taste. The coffee also has a bright fruited taste. One is left with notes of blueberry, jasmine, and bergamot in the aftertaste.
The fruity tastes that characterise Ethiopian coffee can come across as sourness. This fact is proliferated when you switch to light coffee, like Ethiopian coffee, and you are used to the darker roasts.
It is strong. Even though Ethiopian coffee is so diverse, with a lot of different taste profiles, most of the coffee, particually from places like Sidamo & Limu, is complex & can prove strong, particually with nascent coffee connoisseurs.
This will depend on the type of Ethiopian coffee you are drinking. The coffee {farmed|grown in some areas in Ethiopia are more acidic than other types, so you have to check where the coffee is from. Ostensibly though, Ethiopian coffee has mild acidity.
No, Ethiopian coffee beans does not. Almost all of the Ethiopian coffee types are Arabica, which contains a coffee percentage of 1.5. On the other hand, Robusta coffee, the strongest bean, has a caffeine content of 2.4%. Thus, Ethiopian beans doesn’t contain more caffeine than other types from other places in the world.
