FAQs
Ethiopian coffee beans are coffee beans that originate from Ethiopia. Ethiopia has a decorated history of coffee farming, one that dates back a number of centuries ago. It is home for one of the most preferred strains of coffee, Coffea Arabica, also known as Arabica coffee.
Ethiopian coffee beans total 3 5 of the global coffee production. This clearly shows the importance that the Ethiopian coffee farming regions have on global coffee consumption.
It is thought that, about 1000 years ago, a goat herder stumbled upon the coffee tree in Kaffa. Thus, the origin of coffee in Ethiopia is in Kaffa. Even what it is called is like Coffee.
Ethiopian coffee is known worldwide for the quality of flavour & the level of perfection it has. However, why does Ethiopian coffee taste so good?
Ethiopian coffee, primarily, is known for its bright mouthfeels and the winery taste and quality it comes with. The coffee beans from this region are usually of greater acidity & have complex tasting notes.
The main cause of the flavour that comes & has been linked with Ethiopian coffee is the process used. Ethiopian coffee beans are processed naturally; they are dried while the cherry fruit is still on the coffee bean. Thus, the coffee beans develop winery tomes, & they tend to have a higher acidity than coffee beans from other areas.
The medium roasting will provide the best balance between body, flavours, & acidity for Ethiopian coffee. That being said, you have to experiment a bit to get that perfect roast since Ethiopian coffee beans are small & may be finicky, which can make it hard to roast them.
There are a wide range of Ethiopian coffee types. Ethiopian coffee is cultivated in specific areas in the country; Harar, Limu, and Yirgacheffe. The climatic and soil characteristics of these places differ, this changes the flavour of the coffee each location cultures.
The coffee types are mostly marketed under the regions that they come from.
These coffee types are Sidamo, Harar, and Genika.
Yirga Cheffe coffee is a cleaned, wet-processed coffee cultivated in & nearby to a little town in south Ethiopia, called Yirgacheffe. The coffee is farmed at altitudes inbetween 1,700 & 2200 meters ASL. Such altitudes allow Yirga Cheffe coffee to be classified as Strictly High growth (SHG).
Such altitudes slow down the rapid growth of coffee. Since the coffee plants grow at a reduced speed, they have more time to soak in all the nutrients in the soil. With the local climate, the Yirga Cheffe also contributes a huge role; the fruit can develop a more robust taste.
Ethiopian Yirga Cheffe coffee is characterized by its light acidity & the clean & complex floral notes in its aroma. Sometimes, the aroma might even show a hint of coconut. Some Ethiopian Yirga Cheffe coffee varieties show notes of citrus and tangerine.
Yirgacheffe coffee is said to be the best coffee farmed in the south part of Ethiopia & also holds its own against other coffee types from other areas.
Single origin coffee is coffee that is grown from a small and particular location in the world. Many coffee connoisseurs do think that a single origin coffee is, in fact, better than other types of coffee because it is purer & more consistent in flavour. This exclusivity makes single origin coffee more favouable.
Yirgacheffe Coffee is, in fact, single-origin since it is only grown & processed in the Yirgacheffe area. Which is the reason why it shows distinctive notes, aromas, & the feelings it induces.
Ethiopian coffee is Arabica. Ethiopia is the country the coffee Arabica, which is the coffee plant, comes from. Now, it is farmed in numerous regions worldwide, however Ethiopia still farms a lot of it. As mentioned before, Ethiopia grows three percent of all the coffee in the world, which is pretty significant.
Ethiopian Harrar coffee is a wild and exotic naturally processed variety of Arabica coffee. It is primarily farmed on botique farms situated in the Oromia area, formally called Harrar. Thus, the coffee is eponymous.
Sidamo coffee is an Ethiopian coffee type farmed exclusively in the Sidamo.
Sidamo is a big region in the fertile highlands in the Rift Valley. Sidamo is one of three trademarked coffee regions in Ethiopia (along with Harrar and Yirgacheffe). Sidamo coffee beans are known for their rich, full body and crisp acidity. They also have floral and citrus notes.
Ethiopian coffee has a mild and pleasant acidity, as well as a heavy winery and floral taste. The coffee also has a bright fruited taste. One is left with notes of blueberry, jasmine, and bergamot in the aftertaste.
The fruity tastes that characterise Ethiopian coffee can come across as sourness. This fact is proliferated when you switch to light coffee, like Ethiopian coffee, and you are used to the darker roasts.
It is strong. Even though Ethiopian coffee is so diverse, with so many different flavour profiles, a lot the coffee, especially from places like Sidamo & Limu, is complex and can prove strong, particually with nascent coffee lovers.
This will depend on the type of Ethiopian coffee you are drinking. The coffee {farmed|grown in some locations in Ethiopia can be more acidic than other types, so it is good to check where the coffee is from. Apparently though, Ethiopian coffee has mild acidity.
No, Ethiopian coffee does not. The vast majority of the Ethiopian coffee varieties are Arabica, that has a coffee concentration of 1.5%. On the Contrary, Robusta coffee, the strongest bean, has a caffeine content of 2.4%. Therefore, Ethiopian beans does not contain more caffeine than other types from different areas in the world.
