FAQs

Ethiopian coffee beans are coffee beans that are farmed in Ethiopia. Ethiopia has a long history of coffee bean cultivation, one that goes back a number of centuries ago. It is home to one of the most popular species of coffee, Coffea Arabica, also known as Arabica coffee.

Ethiopian coffee beans comprise 3 percent of the global coffee farming. This clearly exhibits the influence that the Ethiopian coffee growing locations have on world coffee consumption.

It is believed that, about 1000 years ago, a goat herder stumbled upon the coffee plant in Kaffa. Thus, the origin of coffee in Ethiopia is in Kaffa. Even what it is called is similar to Coffee.

Ethiopian coffee is known all over the world for the quality of taste and the amount of refinement it comes with. However, why does Ethiopian coffee taste so good?

Ethiopian coffee, primarily, is known for its light mouthfeels and the winery flavour and quality it comes with. The coffee beans from this region are usually of greater acidity and come with complex tasting notes.

The main reason behind the flavour that comes and is associated with Ethiopian coffee is the processing used. Ethiopian coffee beans are processed naturally; they are dried while the cherry fruit is still attached to the coffee bean. Therefore, the coffee beans develop winery tomes, & they usually have a greater acidity than coffee from other countries.

A medium roasting can often give the best balance between body, flavours, and acidity for Ethiopian coffee. However, you have to try out a bit to get that perfect roast since Ethiopian coffee beans are small and can be finicky, which makes it hard to roast them.

There are a myriad of Ethiopian coffee types. Ethiopian coffee is cultured in specific areas in the country; Harar, Limu, and Yirgacheffe. The climatic and soil conditions of these places are different, this affects the taste of the coffee each location produces.

The coffee types are mostly marketed as the areas that they come from.

These coffee types are Sidamo, Harar, and Genika.

Yirga Cheffe coffee is a cleaned, wet-processed coffee farmed in and around a small town in south Ethiopia, named Yirgacheffe. The coffee is grown at altitudes of between 1700 & 2200 meters above sea level. Such altitudes qualify Yirga Cheffe coffee to be classified as Strictly Hard Bean (SHB).

Such altitudes slow down the rapid growth of coffee. Because the coffee plants grow at a reduced pace, they have more time to soak in all the nutrients in the soil. With the local climate, the Yirga Cheffe also contributes a huge role; the fruit can develop a more robust flavour.

Ethiopian Yirga Cheffe coffee is characterized by its light acidity and the clean and complex floral notes in its aroma. Sometimes, the aroma may even show a hint of coconut. Some Ethiopian Yirga Cheffe coffee types exhibit notes of citrus & tangerine.

Yirgacheffe coffee is said to be the best coffee produced in the south part of Ethiopia and also holds its own alongside other coffee varieties from other areas.

Single origin coffee is coffee that is farmed from a little and particular location in the world. Most coffee lovers do think that a single coffee origin is, in fact, better than other types of coffee because it is purer & more homogenous in flavour. This exclusivity makes single origin coffee more desirable.

Yirgacheffe Coffee is, in fact, single-origin since it is only cultured and processed in the Yirga Cheffe area. Which is the reason why it shows distinctive notes, aromas, & the feelings it induces.

Ethiopian coffee is Arabica. Ethiopia is the nation the coffee Arabica, which is the coffee plant, comes from. Now, it is cultivated in numerous areas worldwide, but Ethiopia still grows a lot of it. As stated before, Ethiopia farms three % of all the coffee globally, which is pretty significant.

Ethiopian Harrar coffee is a wild and exotic naturally processed variety of Arabica coffee. It is primarily grown on botique farms located in the Oromia region, formally called Harrar. Thus, the coffee is eponymous.

Sidamo coffee is an Ethiopian coffee variety produced exclusively in the Sidamo.

Sidamo is a big area in the fertile highlands in the Rift Valley. Sidamo is one of three trademarked coffee regions in Ethiopia (along with Harrar and Yirgacheffe). Sidamo coffee beans are known for their rich, full body and crisp acidity. They also have floral and citrus notes.

Ethiopian coffee has a mild and pleasant acidity, as well as a heavy winery and floral taste. The coffee also has a bright fruited taste. One is left with notes of blueberry, jasmine, and bergamot in the aftertaste.

The fruity flavours that characterise Ethiopian coffee can come across as sourness. This fact is proliferated when you switch to light coffee, like Ethiopian coffee, and you are used to the darker roasts.

It is strong. Even though Ethiopian coffee is so diverse, with so many different flavour profiles, a lot the coffee, particually from regions such as Sidamo & Limu, is complex & can prove strong, particually with nascent coffee drinkers.

This depends on the type of Ethiopian coffee you are consuming. The coffee {farmed|grown in some areas in Ethiopia will be more acidic than othervarieties, so you have to check where the coffee is from. Apparently though, Ethiopian coffee shows mild acidity.

No, it doesn’t. The vast majority of the Ethiopian coffee varieties are Arabica, that has a coffee concentration of 1.5%. On the Contrary, Robusta, the strongest bean, contains a caffeine percentage of 2.4. Thus, Ethiopian beans doesn’t contain more caffeine than other types from different locations in the world.
