History of coffee in Central America

Mexico
Coffee was first imported to Mexico in the late 1700’s from Cuba & the Dominican Republic. Mexico had a quick turnaround with it, exporting beans industrially for the first time as soon as 1802.

Costa Rica
Costa Rica was the first country in the region to {haveestablish} a fully functional commercial coffee market. It became a major exporter of coffee beans around the {globe|world{ by the 1820’s.

Since the start of the organization Instituto del Café de Costa Rica in 1933, Costa Rican coffee has thrived and in exhibited good quality. However, Costa Rica only produces less than 1% of the {globe’sworld’s} coffee beans.

Guatemala
Like with the majority of Central America, Guatemala received coffee plants in the latter part of the 1700’s. However, as opposed to Mexico, industrial exporting didn’t really increase until the 1860’s when European migrants launched industrial-scale coffee farms.

It is unclear specifically when coffee plants were imported to Honduras. It is likely that it was during the late 1700’s, as with other Central American countries, however there’s no known record. Multiple sources claim 1804 as the initial year that coffee was grown at major scale.

El Salvador
El Salvador is the smallest country in Central America. It’s not supprising that El Salvador’s coffee production isn’t large.

Coffee arrived at El Salvador in the mid-1700’s, but really took off once indigo farms lost steam to synthetic dyes in the 1800’s. By 1970, coffee growing accounted for 50% of the country’s GDP.
