History of coffee in Central America

Mexico
Coffee plants were first brought to Mexico in the late 1700’s from Cuba and the Dominican Republic. Mexico made a fast turnaround with it, exporting coffee industrially initially as soon as 1802.

Costa Rica
Costa Rica was the first country in the region to {haveestablish} a fully operating commercial coffee market. It was a major exporter of coffee around the {globe|world{ by the 1820’s.

Since the start of the organization Instituto del Café de Costa Rica in 1933, Costa Rican coffee has boomed and in exhibited excellent quality. However, Costa Rica only produces less than 1 percent of the {globe’sworld’s} coffee beans.

Costa Rica has some of the strictest and best standards for farm workers.

Guatemala
As with most of Central American countries, Guatemala received coffee plants in the late 1700’s. But, as opposed to Mexico, industrial production did not really ramp up till the 1860’s when European immigrants started industrial-scale farms.

Honduras
It is unclear exactly when coffee plants were brought to Honduras. It is expected that it was in the late 1700’s, as with other Central American nations, however there’s not a specific record. Multiple sources state 1804 as the first year that coffee was cultivated at large scale.

Since then, Honduras became the largest coffee farmer in Central America.

El Salvador
El Salvador is the littlest nation in Central America. It’s no surprise that El Salvador’s coffee production isn’t massive.

Coffee plants came to El Salvador in the mid-1700’s, but really took off once indigo farms declined due to synthetic dyes in the 1800’s. By 1970, coffee production made up for 50% of the nation’s GDP.
