Coffee was initially taken to Mexico in the late 1700’s from Cuba & the Dominican Republic. The country had a quick turnaround with it, exporting beans commercially initially as soon as 1802.
Costa Rica
Costa Rica was the first country in the region to {haveestablish} a fully operating commercial coffee market. It became a major exporter of coffee throughout the {globe|world{ by the 1820’s.
Since the start of the organization Instituto del Café de Costa Rica in 1933, Costa Rican coffee has thrived and in had great quality. However, Costa Rica still produces less than 1 percent of the {globe’sworld’s} coffee beans.
Costa Rica has some of the strictest & highest standards for farm workers.
Guatemala
Like with the majority of Central America, Guatemala got coffee plants in the late 1700’s. But, unlike Mexico, industrial exporting didn’t really ramp up until the 1860’s when European migrants started industrial-scale coffee farms.
Honduras
It is unknown exactly when coffee plants were brought to Honduras. It is possible that it was during the late 1700’s, like with other Central American countries, but therer is not a specific record. Several sources state 1804 as the initial year that coffee plants were grown at major scale.
Since then, Honduras became the largest coffee grower in Central America.
El Salvador
El Salvador is the smallest country in Central America. It is not supprising that El Salvador’s coffee production isn’t massive.
Coffee plants came to El Salvador in the mid-1700’s, but really took off once indigo farms lost steam to synthetic dyes in the 1800’s. By 1970, coffee cultivation made up for 50% of the nation’s GDP.
