History of coffee in Central America

Mexico
Coffee plants were initially brought to Mexico in the late 1700’s from Cuba and the Dominican Republic. The country made a fast turnaround with it, exporting beans industrially initially as early as 1802.

Costa Rica
Costa Rica was the first nation in Central America to {haveestablish} a fully functional industrial coffee market. It was a major producer of coffee around the {globe|world{ by the 1820’s.

Since the launch of the organization Instituto del Café de Costa Rica in 1933, Costa Rican coffee has boomed and in exhibited excellent quality. But, Costa Rica only grows under 1% of the {globe’sworld’s} coffee beans.

Costa Rica has among the toughest & highest standards for farm labourers.

Guatemala
Like with the majority of Central American nations, Guatemala received coffee plants in the late 1700’s. However, unlike Mexico, industrial exporting did not really increase till the 1860’s when European immigrants started industrial-scale coffee farms.

Honduras
It is unclear exactly when coffee was imported to Honduras. It’s expected that it was in the late 1700’s, as with other Central American countries, however there’s no known record. Several sources claim 1804 as the first year that coffee was produced at major scale.

Since then, Honduras became the largest coffee producer in Central America.

El Salvador
El Salvador is the littlest country in Central America. It is not supprising that El Salvador’s coffee bean production isn’t huge.

Coffee came to El Salvador in the mid-1700’s, but really took off after indigo farms decreased due to synthetic dyes in the 1800’s. By 1970, coffee cultivation accounted for 50% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product.
