Where is Central America?

Central America spans from Mexico in the west to Panama in the east. It sits in the heart of the equatorial zone, commonly called the Bean Belt for its near ideal farming regions. History of coffee in Central America

Mexico
Coffee plants were originally brought to Mexico in the late 1700’s from Cuba and the Dominican Republic. The country had a quick turnaround with it, exporting coffee commercially initially as early as 1802.

Costa Rica
Costa Rica was the first country in Central America to {haveestablish} a fully operating industrial coffee market. It became a major producer of coffee throughout the {globe|world{ by the 1820’s.

Since the launch of the organization Instituto del Café de Costa Rica in 1933, Costa Rican coffee has thrived and in had excellent quality. However, Costa Rica still produces under 1% of the {globe’sworld’s} coffee beans.

Costa Rica has some of the toughest and best standards for farm workers.

Guatemala
As with most of Central America, Guatemala imported coffee plants in the late 1700’s. However, unlike Mexico, industrial production did not really take off until the 1860’s when European migrants started large-scale plantations.

Honduras
It is unclear exactly when coffee plants were brought to Honduras. It is possible that it was in the late 1700’s, like with other Central American countries, but there’s not a known record. Several sources state 1804 as the initial year that coffee plants were farmed at major scale.

Since then, Honduras became the largest coffee grower in Central America.

El Salvador
El Salvador is the littlest nation in Central America. It is not supprising that El Salvador’s coffee bean market isn’t large.

Coffee arrived at El Salvador in the mid-1700’s, but really took off after indigo farms lost steam to synthetic dyes in the 1800’s. By 1970, coffee production made up for 50% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product.
