FAQs

Arabica beans are produced in many countries around the world. Brazil is the largest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is produced in many countries, each country and area will produce a different flavour from what is basically the same coffee species due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are beans from the Coffea arabica species which is usually know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up about 60% of the world’s coffee bean production.

The flavour of Arabica beans varies depending on the region, they are generally sweet with notes of chocolate and sugar. They can also display fruit or berry tasts and can exhibit hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to show more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans which are typically stronger, harsher and may display grainy or rubbery tastes.

Typically people find the taste of Arabica to be nicer to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are more acidic and less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are shown as fruity flavours. Low acidity types can display a reduced fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are commonly considered as nicer  tasting than Robusta beans as they display a more refined sweeter and less bitter flavour. However, some coffee blends than include both Arabica & Robusta can have nicerbetter taste and are extremely popular.

Arabica beans contain caffeine but generally less caffeine compared to Robusta coffee.

Raw Arabica beans have about 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans contain almost twice as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the higher level of caffeine, usually people would rather drink Arabica because it is not as bitter and displays a better flavour.

Arabica coffee is more expensive than Robusta beans because it is more difficult to cultivate.

Arabica is farmed in cooler sub-tropical climates and at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta on the other hand is typically cultivated at sea level and in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name indicates ‘robust’ & tolerates a broader range of environmental conditions. Robusta is easier to grow on the farm, has more bean yield & is more resistant to insects.

No, there is a lot of differences between Arabica beans that are farmed in different {countriesnations} & locations. This is due to the range of climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their culturing and preparation.

The roasting proceedure also plays a major role in the flavour characteristics of the coffee beans. Combining different types & roasting is both an art & science. Professional roasters meticulously control & change every aspect of the roast process to make different flavours in their beans & ensure consistency across batches of roasts. Flavour differs depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a range of additional aspects that are regulated during the roasting.

Darker roasts will exhibit a much richer, bolder flavour than lighter roasted beans. Light roast coffee will retain more flavours than dark roasts. This means that the distinct tastes of the beans from the different locations can often be more distinguishable in lighter roasted beans. This is important to consider when buying coffee.
