FAQs

Arabica beans are farmed in many countries around the globe. Brazil is the largest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is farmed in many nations, each nation and area will result in a distinct flavour from what is essentially the same coffee plant due to their distinct climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are beans from the Coffea arabica tree which is commonly know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the global coffee bean supply.

The flavour of Arabica beans varies depending on the region, they are typically sweet with notes of chocolate and sugar. They can also display fruit or berry tasts and may exhibit hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to have more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans that tend to be stronger, harsher and can exhibit grainy or rubbery overtones.

Most people find the flavour of Arabica to be tastier to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans tend to be more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are shown as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties may display a less fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are commonly thought as superior  tasting than Robusta beans as they exhibit a more refined sweeter and less bitter taste. However, some blended coffee than include both Arabica & Robusta can exhibit superior flavour & are very popular.

Arabica beans contain caffeine but usually less caffeine than Robusta beans.

Raw Arabica beans have about 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have about twice as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the greater level of caffeine, many people would rather have Arabica because it is not as bitter and has a better flavour.

Arabica coffee is most costly than Robusta coffee as it is harder to cultivate.

Arabica is farmed in colder sub-tropical climates & at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta on the other hand is often farmed at sea level and in warmer climates.

Robusta is as its name would suggest ‘robust’ & withstands a wide range of environmental conditions. Robusta is easier to grow on the farm, has a higher bean yield & is better resistant to pests.

No, there is a lot of differences comparing Arabica beans that are grown in different {countriesnations} and areas. This is due to the range of climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their culturing and processing.

The roasting process also influences a major role in the flavour characteristics of the beans. Blending different varieties & roasting is both an art and science. Specialist roasters carefully control and adjust all aspects of the roast proceedure to develop different tastes in their coffee and maintain consistency between batches of coffee. Taste changes depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee & a number of additional aspects that are regulated during the roasting.

Darker roasts will show a much richer, bolder flavour than lighter roasted beans. Light roasted coffee will retain more flavours than darker roasts. This can mean that the distinct tastes of the coffee from the various areas can often be more distinct in light roasted beans. This is important to consider when buying coffee.
