FAQs

Arabica beans are produced in many nations around the globe. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is produced in many nations, each country and area will result in a different flavour from what is essentially the same coffee tree due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other things.

Arabica coffee beans are beans from the Coffea arabica tree which is commonly know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the world’s coffee bean production.

The flavour of Arabica beans varies depending on the region, they are generally sweet with notes of coco and sugar. They can also exhibit fruit or berry flavours and can display hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to display more acidity and less bitterness than Robusta beans which are stronger, harsher & may exhibit grainy or rubbery overtones.

Most people find the taste of Arabica to be nicer to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans tend to be more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are tasted as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties may exhibit a reduced fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are commonly considered as better  tasting than Robusta beans as they exhibit a more refined sweeter & less bitter taste. However, some coffee blends than include both Arabica & Robusta can show superior taste & are extremely popular.

Arabica beans have caffeine but commonly less caffeine as opposed to Robusta coffee beans.

Raw Arabica beans have about 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans contain about double as much caffeine, at 2.2percent.

Despite the greater level of caffeine, commonly people prefer to consume Arabica because it is not as bitter and exhibits a superior flavour.

Arabica coffee is more expensive than Robusta coffee because it is harder to farm.

Arabica is cultivated in colder sub-tropical climates & at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta on the other hand is typically cultivated at sea level and in warmer climates.

Robusta is as its name would suggest ‘robust’ & tolerates a wide range of climatic conditions. Robusta is simplier to grow on the farm, has greater bean yield and is better resistant to pest insects.

No, there are a lot of differences comparing Arabica beans that are farmed in different {countriesnations} & locations. This is due to the range of climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their culturing and preparation.

The roast process also influences a significant role in the flavour profile of the coffee beans. Combining different types and roasting is an art and science. Professional roasters meticulously control & change every aspect of the roasting process to make different flavours in their beans & maintain consistency across batches of beans. Flavour differs depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a number of other aspects that are regulated during the roast.

Darker roasts will exhibit a much richer, bolder taste than lightly roasted coffee. Light roast coffee beans will keep more flavours than darker roasts. This can mean that the distinct flavours of the beans from the various locations are be more pronounced in light roasted coffee. This is key to think about when buying coffee beans.
