FAQs

Arabica beans are cultured in many countries around the globe. Brazil is the largest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is grown in many nations, each nation and area will result in a different taste from what is essentially the same coffee plant due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica species that are commonly know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the world’s coffee bean supply.

The flavour of Arabica beans changes depending on the location, they are usually sweet with notes of chocolate & sugar. They can also have fruit or berry tasts and may have hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to display more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans that are stronger, harsher and can exhibit grainy or rubbery tastes.

Most people find the flavour of Arabica to be better to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans tend to be more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are shown as fruity flavours. Low acidity types may have a reduced fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are typically thought as nicer  tasting than Robusta beans as they exhibit a more refined sweeter and less bitter taste. However, some coffee blends than include both Arabica and Robusta can exhibit nicerbetter taste & are extremely renowned.

Arabica beans have caffeine but generally less caffeine than Robusta coffee.

Raw Arabica beans contain about 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have almost twice as much caffeine, at 2.2percent.

Despite the higher amount of caffeine, typically people prefer to consume Arabica as it is less bitter and exhibits a better flavour.

Arabica coffee is most costly than Robusta beans because it is more difficult to grow.

Arabica is grown in colder sub-tropical climates and at a higher altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta on the other hand is typically cultivated at sea level & in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name suggests ‘robust’ and tolerates a broader range of climatic conditions. Robusta is easier to tend to on the plantation, has a higher fruit yield and is more resistant to bugs.

No, there are a lot of differences between Arabica beans that are grown in different {countriesnations} and regions. This is due to the range of climates, soils and other characteristics associated with their culturing and preparation.

The roasting process also influences a major part in the flavour profile of the coffee beans. Combining different varieties and roasting is an art and science. Professional roasters meticulously control & adjust all aspects of the roasting process to make different flavours in their coffee & maintain consistency between batches of beans. Taste changes based on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a number of additional things that are controlled during the roast.

Darker roasts will have a much richer, bolder taste than lightly roasted beans. Light roast coffee beans will keep more flavours than dark roasts. This means that the distinguishable tastes of the beans from the various regions can often be more pronounced in lighter roasted coffee. This is important to think about when buying coffee.
