FAQs

Arabica beans are farmed in many nations around the world. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is grown in many countries, each nation and region will produce a different taste from what is basically the same coffee bush due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other things.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica plant that are commonly know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up about 60% of the global coffee bean production.

The taste of Arabica beans changes depending on the area, they are typically sweet with notes of coco & sugar. They can also exhibit fruit or berry flavours & may show hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to display more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans which tend to be stronger, harsher and may show grainy or rubbery overtones.

Typically people find the taste of Arabica to be tastier to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are typcially more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are shown as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties can show a reduced fruity taste.

Arabica coffee beans are usually known as nicer  tasting than Robusta beans as they exhibit a more refined sweeter & less bitter taste. However, some blends than include both Arabica and Robusta can have superior flavour and are very popular.

Arabica beans have caffeine but typcially less caffeine as opposed to Robusta coffee.

Raw Arabica beans contain ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans contain almost double as much caffeine, at 2.2percent.

Despite the greater amount of caffeine, typically people would rather drink Arabica because it is less bitter & exhibits a better taste.

Arabica coffee is more expensive compared to Robusta beans as it is harder to farm.

Arabica is cultivated in cooler sub-tropical climates & at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is often farmed at sea level & in warmer climates.

Robusta is as its name suggests ‘robust’ and withstands a broader range of environmental conditions. Robusta is easier to tend to on the plantation, has more bean yield & is better resistant to pests.

No, there are a lot of differences comparing Arabica beans that are cultured in different {countriesnations} and locations. This is due to the range of climates, soils and other characteristics associated with their farming and preparation.

The roast proceedure also plays a major part in the flavour characteristics of the coffee. Blending different types and roasting is an art & science. Specialist roasters carefully control & change all aspects of the roast proceedure to craft different flavours in their beans and maintain consistency across batches of roasts. Taste changes depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee & a number of additional aspects that are regulated during the proceedure.

Darker roasts will show a much richer, bolder flavour than lighter roasted coffee. Light roasted coffee will retain more flavours than dark roasts. This means that the marked flavours of the coffee from the different regions can often be more distinct in lighter roasted beans. This is important to think about when purchasing beans.
