FAQs

Arabica beans are cultured in many countries around the world. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is farmed in many nations, each country and area will make a distinct flavour from what is basically the same coffee tree due to their distinct climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are beans from the Coffea arabica shrub which is commonly know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the world’s coffee bean production.

The taste of Arabica beans changes depending on the region, they are usually sweet with notes of coco and sugar. They can also display fruit or berry flavours and may display hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to show more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans that are stronger, harsher & can exhibit grainy or rubbery flavours.

Manny people find the flavour of Arabica to be tastier to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans tend to be more acidic and less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid come through as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties may show a reduced fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are usually thought as better  tasting than Robusta beans as they exhibit a more refined sweeter and less bitter taste. However, some blended coffee than include both Arabica and Robusta can show superior flavour and are very popular.

Arabica beans have caffeine but commonly less caffeine as opposed to Robusta coffee.

Raw Arabica beans have about 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have almost twice as much caffeine, at 2.2percent.

Despite the greater level of caffeine, most people would rather consume Arabica because it is less bitter and has a superior flavour.

Arabica coffee is more expensive than Robusta coffee as it is more difficult to grow.

Arabica is grown in colder sub-tropical climates & at a higher altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is often grown at sea level and in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name suggests ‘robust’ and withstands a wide range of environmental conditions. Robusta is easier to grow on the plantation, has a higher bean yield & is more resistant to pests.

No, there are a lot of differences between Arabica coffeecoffee beans that are grown in different {countriesnations} & regions. This is because of the different climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their farming and processing.

The roasting proceedure also plays a major role in the taste characteristics of the coffee beans. Mixing different varieties & roasting is an art and science. Specialist roasters carefully control & change every aspect of the roast process to develop different tastes in their coffee & ensure consistency between batches of beans. Taste differs based on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee & a range of other aspects that are controlled during the roasting.

Darker roasts will show a much richer, bolder flavour than lighter roasted beans. Light roasted beans will keep more flavours than darker roasts. This means that the distinct flavours of the beans from the different areas are be more distinct in light roasted beans. This is key to think about when purchasing coffee.
