FAQs

Arabica beans are grown in many nations around the world. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is produced in many countries, each country & region will result in a different flavour from what is basically the same coffee bush due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other things.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica species which is commonly know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the world’s coffee bean supply.

The taste of Arabica beans varies depending on the area, they are usually sweet with notes of coco and sugar. They can also exhibit fruit or berry tasts & may exhibit hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to exhibit more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans which are stronger, harsher and can show grainy or rubbery flavours.

Usually people find the taste of Arabica to be better to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are usually more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are tasted as fruity flavours. Low acidity types can display a less fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are commonly considered as superior  tasting than Robusta beans as they have a more refined sweeter & less bitter flavour. However, some coffee blends than include both Arabica & Robusta can have nicerbetter flavour and are very popular.

Arabica beans contain caffeine but generally less caffeine compared to Robusta coffee beans.

Raw Arabica beans contain about 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans contain almost twice as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the higher level of caffeine, typically people would rather drink Arabica as it is less bitter and has a better flavour.

Arabica coffee is more expensive than Robusta beans as it is more difficult to farm.

Arabica is grown in cooler sub-tropical climates and at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is often farmed at sea level & in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name suggests ‘robust’ and withstands a broader range of environmental conditions. Robusta is simplier to tend to on the farm, has a higher bean yield & is better resistant to insects.

No, there is a lot of differences between Arabica beans that are farmed in different {countriesnations} & regions. This is due to the different climates, soils and other characteristics associated with their culturing and processing.

The roast process also influences a significant role in the flavour characteristics of the beans. Combining different types & roasting is both an art and science. Specialist roasters carefully control and change every aspect of the roasting process to craft different tastes in their beans & maintain consistency across batches of roasts. Taste changes depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a number of additional factors that are regulated during the roast.

Darker roasts will show a much richer, bolder taste than lighter roasted beans. Light roasted beans typcially retain more tastes than dark roasts. This can mean that the distinguishable flavours of the beans from the various regions can often be more pronounced in light roasted coffee. This is key to consider when buying coffee beans.
