FAQs

Arabica beans are produced in many countries around the globe. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is grown in many nations, each nation and location will result in a different taste from what is essentially the same coffee plant due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are beans from the Coffea arabica plant which is typically know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the world’s coffee bean production.

The taste of Arabica beans changes depending on the location, they are generally sweet with notes of coco and sugar. They can also display fruit or berry flavours and can have hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to show more acidity and less bitterness than Robusta beans which are typically stronger, harsher & can have grainy or rubbery overtones.

Typically people find the flavour of Arabica to be nicer to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans tend to be more acidic and less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are shown as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties can display a reduced fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are usually considered as nicer  tasting than Robusta beans as they show a more refined sweeter and less bitter flavour. However, some blended coffee than include both Arabica and Robusta can exhibit superior taste & are extremely popular.

Arabica beans contain caffeine but typcially less caffeine as opposed to Robusta coffee beans.

Raw Arabica beans have about 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have about double as much caffeine, at 2.2percent.

Despite the higher amount of caffeine, commonly people prefer to drink Arabica as it is less bitter & has a nicer taste.

Arabica coffee is most costly compared to Robusta beans because it is harder to cultivate.

Arabica is farmed in cooler sub-tropical climates and at a higher altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is often farmed at sea level and in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name suggests ‘robust’ and tolerates a wide range of environmental conditions. Robusta is easier to grow on the farm, has a higher bean yield & is more resistant to pests.

No, there are a lot of differences between Arabica beans that are farmed in different {countriesnations} and areas. This is because of the different climates, soils and other characteristics associated with their culturing and processing.

The roasting proceedure also influences a major part in the flavour characteristics of the coffee. Mixing different types & roasting is both an art & science. Specialist roasters meticulously control & adjust all aspects of the roast process to develop different tastes in their beans and maintain consistency across batches of beans. Flavour changes depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a range of other factors that are controlled during the roast.

Darker roasts will exhibit a much richer, bolder flavour than lighter roasted beans. Light roast coffee typcially retain more tastes than darker roasts. This can mean that the distinguishable flavours of the beans from the various locations are be more distinct in lighter roasted beans. This is key to consider when buying coffee.
