FAQs

Arabica beans are produced in many nations around the world. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is grown in many countries, each nation and location will make a distinct taste from what is essentially the same coffee species due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica species which is typically know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up about 60% of the world’s coffee bean supply.

The taste of Arabica beans varies depending on the region, they are typically sweet with notes of chocolate & sugar. They can also show fruit or berry tasts and may have hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to have more acidity and less bitterness than Robusta beans that are stronger, harsher and can show grainy or rubbery flavours.

Manny people find the flavour of Arabica to be tastier to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are typcially more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid come through as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties may exhibit a reduced fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are usually considered as better  tasting than Robusta beans as they have a more refined sweeter and less bitter flavour. However, some coffee blends than include both Arabica and Robusta can have superior flavour & are very renowned.

Arabica beans have caffeine but typcially less caffeine as opposed to Robusta coffee.

Raw Arabica beans have ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have almost double as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the higher level of caffeine, most people would rather have Arabica because it is not as bitter and exhibits a better flavour.

Arabica coffee is most costly compared to Robusta coffee as it is harder to farm.

Arabica is farmed in colder sub-tropical climates and at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta on the other hand is usually grown at sea level & in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name suggests ‘robust’ and tolerates a wide range of environmental conditions. Robusta is simplier to grow on the plantation, has more fruit yield & is more resistant to pest insects.

No, there are a lot of differences comparing Arabica beans that are farmed in different {countriesnations} and areas. This is due to the different climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their culturing and processing.

The roasting proceedure also plays a significant role in the taste profile of the coffee. Mixing different varieties & roasting is both an art and science. Professional roasters carefully control & adjust all aspects of the roasting proceedure to craft different flavours in their coffee & maintain consistency across batches of roasts. Taste changes based on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee & a number of additional conditions that are regulated during the roast.

Darker roasts will exhibit a much richer, bolder flavour than lighter roasted coffee. Light roasted coffee beans typcially retain more tastes than darker roasts. This means that the distinct flavours of the beans from the different areas are be more distinct in light roasted beans. This is paramount to think about when purchasing beans.
