FAQs

Arabica beans are produced in many countries around the globe. Brazil is the largest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is grown in many countries, each nation and region will produce a different flavour from what is basically the same coffee plant due to their distinct climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are beans from the Coffea arabica tree that are typically know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the global coffee bean production.

The taste of Arabica beans varies depending on the region, they are usually sweet with notes of coco and sugar. They can also show fruit or berry flavours & can exhibit hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to exhibit more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans that are typically stronger, harsher and can display grainy or rubbery overtones.

Usually people find the taste of Arabica to be nicer to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans tend to be more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are exhibited as fruity flavours. Low acidity types can have a less fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are typically thought as better  tasting than Robusta beans as they display a more refined sweeter & less bitter taste. However, some coffee blends than include both Arabica & Robusta can have superior taste & are very popular.

Arabica beans contain caffeine but generally less caffeine compared to Robusta beans.

Raw Arabica beans have ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have almost double as much caffeine, at 2.2percent.

Despite the greater level of caffeine, commonly people prefer to have Arabica as it is not as bitter and shows a superior flavour.

Arabica coffee is more expensive compared to Robusta coffee as it is more difficult to grow.

Arabica is farmed in cooler sub-tropical climates and at a higher altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is often grown at sea level and in warmer climates.

Robusta is as its name indicates ‘robust’ and tolerates a broader range of environmental conditions. Robusta is simplier to tend to on the farm, has more fruit yield and is more resistant to insects.

No, there are a lot of differences comparing Arabica beans that are cultured in different {countriesnations} and regions. This is due to the range of climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their farming and preparation.

The roasting process also plays a major role in the flavour characteristics of the beans. Combining different types and roasting is an art & science. Professional roasters carefully control & change all aspects of the roast proceedure to develop different tastes in their coffee & maintain consistency across batches of roasts. Flavour changes based on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a number of other things that are regulated during the proceedure.

Darker roasts will show a much richer, bolder flavour than lighter roasted coffee. Light roasted beans typcially retain more tastes than darker roasts. This means that the distinct tastes of the coffee from the different regions are be more pronounced in lighter roasted coffee. This is key to think about when buying coffee beans.
