FAQs
Arabica beans are produced in many countries around the world. Brazil is the largest producer of Arabica. Even though Arabica is cultured in many countries, each nation & region will make a different taste from what is basically the same coffee bush due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other things.
Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica species that are typically know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up about 60% of the world’s coffee bean supply.
The flavour of Arabica beans changes depending on the region, they are typically sweet with notes of coco & sugar. They can also show fruit or berry tasts and can display hints of cereal or nuts.
Arabica tends to exhibit more acidity and less bitterness than Robusta beans that tend to be stronger, harsher and may show grainy or rubbery tastes.
Most people find the flavour of Arabica to be tastier to that of Robusta.
When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.
Yes, Arabica beans tend to be more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans. The acid are shown as fruity flavours. Low acidity types may exhibit a less fruity taste.
Arabica coffee beans are typically thought as superior tasting than Robusta beans as they have a more refined sweeter and less bitter flavour. However, some blended coffee than include both Arabica and Robusta can show superior taste and are extremely popular.
Arabica beans have caffeine but usually less caffeine as opposed to Robusta coffee beans.
Raw Arabica beans have ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans contain about twice as much caffeine, at 2.2%.
Despite the greater amount of caffeine, typically people would rather have Arabica as it is not as bitter and has a superior taste.
Arabica coffee is more expensive than Robusta beans as it is harder to farm.
Arabica is cultivated in cooler sub-tropical climates and at a higher altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta on the other hand is commonly grown at sea level and in warmer climates.
Robusta is as its name indicates ‘robust’ & withstands a wide range of environmental conditions. Robusta is easier to tend to on the plantation, has a higher bean yield & is better resistant to pest insects.
No, there are a lot of differences between Arabica beans that are grown in different {countriesnations} & locations. This is because of the different climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their farming and processing.
The roast process also plays a significant role in the flavour profile of the coffee beans. Blending different types and roasting is both an art and science. Specialist roasters meticulously control & adjust all aspects of the roast process to develop different flavours in their beans & ensure consistency across batches of coffee. Taste differs depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a range of additional conditions that are regulated during the roast.
Darker roasts will exhibit a much richer, bolder taste than lightly roasted beans. Light roast coffee beans will retain more flavours than dark roasts. This means that the marked tastes of the beans from the different locations can often be more distinguishable in lighter roasted beans. This is key to think about when buying beans.
