FAQs

Arabica beans are cultured in many countries around the globe. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is cultured in many countries, each country & region will result in a distinct taste from what is essentially the same coffee plant due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica species that are usually know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the global coffee bean production.

The taste of Arabica beans varies depending on the location, they are generally sweet with notes of chocolate & sugar. They can also display fruit or berry flavours and can have hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to show more acidity and less bitterness than Robusta beans that are typically stronger, harsher & may exhibit grainy or rubbery tastes.

Usually people find the flavour of Arabica to be superior to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are more acidic and less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are shown as fruity flavours. Low acidity types may have a less fruity taste.

Arabica coffee beans are usually known as better  tasting than Robusta beans as they have a more refined sweeter & less bitter taste. However, some blends than include both Arabica and Robusta can have superior taste and are extremely popular.

Arabica beans contain caffeine but typcially less caffeine compared to Robusta beans.

Raw Arabica beans contain ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have almost double as much caffeine, at 2.2percent.

Despite the greater level of caffeine, commonly people would rather consume Arabica as it is not as bitter & exhibits a superior taste.

Arabica coffee is more expensive compared to Robusta beans as it is harder to cultivate.

Arabica is cultivated in colder sub-tropical climates and at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is often grown at sea level and in warmer climates.

Robusta is as its name would suggest ‘robust’ and tolerates a broader range of climatic conditions. Robusta is simplier to tend to on the farm, has more bean yield & is more resistant to bugs.

No, there is a lot of differences comparing Arabica beans that are farmed in different {countriesnations} and regions. This is due to the range of climates, soils and other characteristics associated with their culturing and preparation.

The roasting process also influences a significant part in the flavour profile of the coffee. Combining different varieties and roasting is both an art & science. Professional roasters carefully control and adjust every aspect of the roasting process to develop different tastes in their coffee and ensure consistency across batches of coffee. Taste changes depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee & a number of additional things that are regulated during the roast.

Darker roasts will exhibit a much richer, bolder flavour than lighter roasted beans. Light roasted coffee beans typcially keep more flavours than darker roasts. This means that the distinguishable flavours of the coffee from the different locations can often be more distinct in lighter roasted coffee. This is paramount to consider when purchasing coffee.
