FAQs

Arabica beans are produced in many countries around the world. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is produced in many nations, each country & region will result in a different flavour from what is basically the same coffee species due to their distinct climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other things.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica shrub which is usually know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the world’s coffee bean production.

The flavour of Arabica beans varies depending on the location, they are generally sweet with notes of chocolate and sugar. They can also have fruit or berry flavours & can show hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to display more acidity and less bitterness than Robusta beans which tend to be stronger, harsher and can show grainy or rubbery flavours.

Typically people find the flavour of Arabica to be superior to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans tend to be more acidic and less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are exhibited as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties may have a less fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are usually known as superior  tasting than Robusta beans as they have a more refined sweeter & less bitter taste. However, some blended coffee than include both Arabica & Robusta can display superior flavour & are extremely popular.

Arabica beans contain caffeine but generally less caffeine compared to Robusta beans.

Raw Arabica beans have ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have almost twice as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the greater level of caffeine, commonly people prefer to have Arabica as it is less bitter & displays a superior flavour.

Arabica coffee is more expensive compared to Robusta coffee as it is more difficult to grow.

Arabica is farmed in colder sub-tropical climates and at a higher altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is commonly grown at sea level & in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name would suggest ‘robust’ & tolerates a broader range of environmental conditions. Robusta is simplier to grow on the plantation, has greater fruit yield and is better resistant to bugs.

No, there is a lot of differences comparing Arabica coffeecoffee beans that are farmed in different {countriesnations} and regions. This is due to the range of climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their farming and processing.

The roasting proceedure also plays a significant role in the flavour characteristics of the coffee. Blending different varieties & roasting is an art and science. Professional roasters carefully control & change every aspect of the roasting proceedure to craft different flavours in their beans & ensure consistency between batches of coffee. Flavour changes depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee & a range of additional factors that are regulated during the roast.

Darker roasts will have a much richer, bolder flavour than lightly roasted beans. Light roast beans will retain more flavours than darker roasts. This means that the marked flavours of the beans from the different regions are be more distinct in lighter roasted beans. This is key to think about when buying coffee.
