FAQs

Arabica beans are cultured in many nations around the globe. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is cultured in many countries, each country & location will produce a distinct flavour from what is basically the same coffee plant due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other things.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica shrub which is commonly know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the global coffee bean production.

The flavour of Arabica beans varies depending on the area, they are generally sweet with notes of chocolate & sugar. They can also have fruit or berry flavours and can show hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to have more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans that are stronger, harsher and can exhibit grainy or rubbery flavours.

Typically people find the taste of Arabica to be tastier to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans tend to be more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are shown as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties can exhibit a reduced fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are typically considered as better  tasting than Robusta beans as they show a more refined sweeter & less bitter taste. However, some blended coffee than include both Arabica and Robusta can have superior flavour and are very renowned.

Arabica beans contain caffeine but commonly less caffeine as opposed to Robusta beans.

Raw Arabica beans have ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have almost twice as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the greater level of caffeine, many people would rather have Arabica as it is not as bitter & shows a superior taste.

Arabica coffee is more expensive compared to Robusta beans because it is more difficult to grow.

Arabica is farmed in colder sub-tropical climates and at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is commonly farmed at sea level and in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name indicates ‘robust’ & tolerates a broader range of environmental conditions. Robusta is easier to grow on the plantation, has more bean yield and is more resistant to insects.

No, there is a lot of differences between Arabica beans that are cultured in different {countriesnations} & regions. This is because of the different climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their culturing and preparation.

The roast proceedure also plays a significant role in the taste characteristics of the beans. Blending different types & roasting is both an art & science. Specialist roasters carefully control & change all aspects of the roasting proceedure to craft different tastes in their coffee and maintain consistency between batches of beans. Flavour differs depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee & a range of additional things that are controlled during the roasting.

Darker roasts will exhibit a much richer, bolder taste than lighter roasted beans. Light roasted beans will keep more tastes than dark roasts. This can mean that the distinct tastes of the coffee from the various areas can often be more pronounced in lighter roasted beans. This is paramount to think about when purchasing coffee beans.
