FAQs

Arabica beans are produced in many countries around the world. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is farmed in many countries, each nation and area will result in a distinct taste from what is essentially the same coffee tree due to their distinct climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other things.

Arabica coffee beans are beans from the Coffea arabica plant that are typically know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up about 60% of the world’s coffee bean production.

The flavour of Arabica beans changes depending on the region, they are typically sweet with notes of coco & sugar. They can also exhibit fruit or berry flavours and can display hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to display more acidity and less bitterness than Robusta beans that tend to be stronger, harsher and may exhibit grainy or rubbery tastes.

Most people find the flavour of Arabica to be superior to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are typcially more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are exhibited as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties can exhibit a less fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are usually considered as nicer  tasting than Robusta beans as they display a more refined sweeter & less bitter taste. However, some blended coffee than include both Arabica and Robusta can have nicerbetter flavour & are extremely popular.

Arabica beans have caffeine but generally less caffeine than Robusta coffee.

Raw Arabica beans contain about 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans contain about double as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the greater level of caffeine, typically people prefer to consume Arabica because it is less bitter & has a better flavour.

Arabica coffee is more expensive compared to Robusta beans as it is more difficult to cultivate.

Arabica is farmed in cooler sub-tropical climates & at a higher altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is commonly farmed at sea level and in warmer climates.

Robusta is as its name would suggest ‘robust’ and withstands a wide range of environmental conditions. Robusta is simplier to tend to on the plantation, has a higher bean yield and is better resistant to pest insects.

No, there are a lot of differences comparing Arabica beans that are grown in different {countriesnations} and regions. This is due to the range of climates, soils and other characteristics associated with their culturing and preparation.

The roasting proceedure also plays a major role in the taste profile of the coffee. Combining different varieties & roasting is both an art & science. Specialist roasters carefully control and adjust all aspects of the roasting process to develop different flavours in their beans & maintain consistency between batches of roasts. Flavour changes based on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a range of other conditions that are controlled during the roasting.

Darker roasts will exhibit a much richer, bolder flavour than lighter roasted beans. Light roasted coffee usually retain more flavours than dark roasts. This can mean that the distinguishable flavours of the coffee from the different regions are be more distinct in light roasted coffee. This is important to consider when buying coffee.
