FAQs

Arabica beans are produced in many countries around the world. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is produced in many nations, each nation and region will make a distinct flavour from what is essentially the same coffee plant due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica tree which is typically know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the world’s coffee bean production.

The flavour of Arabica beans changes depending on the area, they are typically sweet with notes of coco & sugar. They can also have fruit or berry flavours & may have hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to display more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans which are typically stronger, harsher and may show grainy or rubbery tastes.

Usually people find the taste of Arabica to be superior to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are usually more acidic and less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are exhibited as fruity flavours. Low acidity types may display a less fruity taste.

Arabica coffee beans are usually thought as nicer  tasting than Robusta beans as they exhibit a more refined sweeter and less bitter flavour. However, some blends than include both Arabica & Robusta can have nicerbetter taste and are very popular.

Arabica beans have caffeine but generally less caffeine as opposed to Robusta coffee beans.

Raw Arabica beans contain ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans contain about double as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the higher level of caffeine, usually people would rather drink Arabica as it is less bitter and has a nicer flavour.

Arabica coffee is most costly than Robusta beans as it is more difficult to cultivate.

Arabica is grown in colder sub-tropical climates & at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is usually farmed at sea level & in warmer climates.

Robusta is as its name suggests ‘robust’ & tolerates a wide range of environmental conditions. Robusta is simplier to grow on the plantation, has greater bean yield & is better resistant to pests.

No, there are a lot of differences between Arabica coffeecoffee beans that are grown in different {countriesnations} and locations. This is due to the range of climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their farming and preparation.

The roast process also plays a major role in the taste profile of the coffee. Blending different varieties & roasting is both an art and science. Specialist roasters carefully control & adjust all aspects of the roast process to make different flavours in their coffee and maintain consistency across batches of roasts. Flavour changes depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee & a range of other things that are controlled during the proceedure.

Darker roasts will exhibit a much richer, bolder taste than lighter roasted coffee. Light roast coffee beans typcially keep more flavours than darker roasts. This means that the marked flavours of the coffee from the different regions can often be more distinguishable in lighter roasted beans. This is key to think about when purchasing coffee beans.
