FAQs
Arabica beans are cultured in many countries around the world. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica. Even though Arabica is grown in many countries, each nation and area will produce a distinct flavour from what is essentially the same coffee plant due to their distinct climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other things.
Arabica coffee beans are beans from the Coffea arabica tree which is commonly know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the global coffee bean production.
The flavour of Arabica beans changes depending on the region, they are usually sweet with notes of chocolate & sugar. They can also display fruit or berry flavours & may display hints of cereal or nuts.
Arabica tends to have more acidity and less bitterness than Robusta beans that tend to be stronger, harsher and may display grainy or rubbery overtones.
Typically people find the taste of Arabica to be nicer to that of Robusta.
When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.
Yes, Arabica beans are usually more acidic and less bitter than Robusta beans. The acid come through as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties can show a less fruity flavour.
Arabica coffee beans are commonly known as better tasting than Robusta beans as they exhibit a more refined sweeter and less bitter taste. However, some coffee blends than include both Arabica and Robusta can exhibit superior flavour & are very renowned.
Arabica beans have caffeine but typcially less caffeine compared to Robusta coffee.
Raw Arabica beans have ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have almost twice as much caffeine, at 2.2percent.
Despite the greater level of caffeine, typically people would rather have Arabica because it is not as bitter and shows a better taste.
Arabica coffee is more expensive compared to Robusta coffee as it is more difficult to grow.
Arabica is farmed in cooler sub-tropical climates and at a higher altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta on the other hand is commonly grown at sea level & in hotter climates.
Robusta is as its name indicates ‘robust’ and withstands a wide range of environmental conditions. Robusta is easier to tend to on the farm, has a higher bean yield and is more resistant to insects.
No, there is a lot of differences between Arabica beans that are farmed in different {countriesnations} and regions. This is due to the range of climates, soils and other characteristics associated with their culturing and preparation.
The roasting process also influences a major role in the flavour profile of the coffee beans. Combining different varieties and roasting is both an art & science. Specialist roasters carefully control & change every aspect of the roast proceedure to craft different tastes in their coffee & maintain consistency across batches of roasts. Taste differs based on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee & a range of other things that are regulated during the proceedure.
Darker roasts will show a much richer, bolder taste than lighter roasted beans. Light roasted beans typcially retain more tastes than darker roasts. This can mean that the marked tastes of the coffee from the different locations are be more distinguishable in lighter roasted coffee. This is key to think about when purchasing coffee beans.
