FAQs

Arabica beans are farmed in many countries around the world. Brazil is the largest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is cultured in many countries, each country and location will produce a different flavour from what is essentially the same coffee species due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica tree which is typically know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up about 60% of the world’s coffee bean supply.

The flavour of Arabica beans changes depending on the area, they are typically sweet with notes of coco & sugar. They can also exhibit fruit or berry tasts & can display hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to have more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans that tend to be stronger, harsher and may exhibit grainy or rubbery tastes.

Most people find the taste of Arabica to be tastier to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are usually more acidic and less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid come through as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties can display a less fruity taste.

Arabica coffee beans are commonly thought as superior  tasting than Robusta beans as they display a more refined sweeter and less bitter flavour. However, some coffee blends than include both Arabica & Robusta can exhibit superior flavour & are extremely popular.

Arabica beans have caffeine but typcially less caffeine compared to Robusta beans.

Raw Arabica beans have about 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have about twice as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the higher amount of caffeine, usually people would rather drink Arabica as it is not as bitter and has a nicer taste.

Arabica coffee is more expensive compared to Robusta coffee as it is more difficult to cultivate.

Arabica is cultivated in cooler sub-tropical climates & at a higher altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is commonly cultivated at sea level & in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name indicates ‘robust’ and withstands a wide range of climatic conditions. Robusta is simplier to grow on the plantation, has more fruit yield & is better resistant to pest insects.

No, there are a lot of differences between Arabica coffeecoffee beans that are cultured in different {countriesnations} & areas. This is due to the range of climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their farming and preparation.

The roasting process also influences a significant role in the taste profile of the beans. Combining different types & roasting is both an art and science. Professional roasters meticulously control & change all aspects of the roasting proceedure to craft different flavours in their beans and maintain consistency between batches of beans. Flavour differs depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a range of additional conditions that are regulated during the proceedure.

Darker roasts will have a much richer, bolder flavour than lightly roasted coffee. Light roast coffee beans usually retain more tastes than darker roasts. This can mean that the marked tastes of the coffee from the various regions can often be more distinguishable in lighter roasted coffee. This is key to think about when buying coffee beans.
