FAQs

Arabica beans are farmed in many nations around the globe. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is produced in many countries, each country and location will make a different flavour from what is essentially the same coffee plant due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica plant that are typically know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up about 60% of the global coffee bean supply.

The flavour of Arabica beans varies depending on the location, they are generally sweet with notes of coco and sugar. They can also show fruit or berry flavours and can show hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to display more acidity and less bitterness than Robusta beans which are stronger, harsher & can have grainy or rubbery flavours.

Typically people find the taste of Arabica to be tastier to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are tasted as fruity flavours. Low acidity types may exhibit a less fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are commonly considered as better  tasting than Robusta beans as they show a more refined sweeter and less bitter taste. However, some blends than include both Arabica and Robusta can show superior flavour and are very popular.

Arabica beans contain caffeine but commonly less caffeine compared to Robusta coffee beans.

Raw Arabica beans contain ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans contain almost twice as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the greater level of caffeine, many people prefer to consume Arabica because it is not as bitter and shows a nicer taste.

Arabica coffee is more expensive compared to Robusta coffee as it is more difficult to cultivate.

Arabica is grown in cooler sub-tropical climates & at a higher altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is often grown at sea level & in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name suggests ‘robust’ and tolerates a broader range of climatic conditions. Robusta is easier to grow on the farm, has more bean yield & is more resistant to pests.

No, there are a lot of differences comparing Arabica beans that are grown in different {countriesnations} and regions. This is because of the different climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their culturing and preparation.

The roast proceedure also plays a significant part in the flavour characteristics of the beans. Blending different varieties & roasting is an art & science. Specialist roasters carefully control & adjust every aspect of the roasting proceedure to develop different flavours in their coffee & maintain consistency across batches of beans. Taste differs based on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee & a number of other factors that are regulated during the process.

Darker roasts will have a much richer, bolder flavour than lightly roasted beans. Light roast coffee usually keep more flavours than dark roasts. This means that the distinct tastes of the coffee from the various regions can often be more distinguishable in light roasted beans. This is paramount to think about when buying coffee beans.
