FAQs

Arabica beans are produced in many countries around the globe. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is produced in many nations, each nation and region will produce a different flavour from what is basically the same coffee plant due to their distinct climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica species that are typically know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up about 60% of the world’s coffee bean production.

The taste of Arabica beans varies depending on the region, they are generally sweet with notes of chocolate and sugar. They can also have fruit or berry flavours and may show hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to exhibit more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans that are typically stronger, harsher and can display grainy or rubbery tastes.

Usually people find the taste of Arabica to be superior to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans tend to be more acidic and less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid come through as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties can exhibit a reduced fruity taste.

Arabica coffee beans are typically thought as better  tasting than Robusta beans as they exhibit a more refined sweeter and less bitter taste. However, some blended coffee than include both Arabica & Robusta can show nicerbetter taste and are extremely popular.

Arabica beans contain caffeine but generally less caffeine than Robusta beans.

Raw Arabica beans contain ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans contain about double as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the greater amount of caffeine, usually people prefer to have Arabica because it is less bitter & displays a better taste.

Arabica coffee is most costly than Robusta beans as it is more difficult to grow.

Arabica is grown in cooler sub-tropical climates & at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is often farmed at sea level and in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name indicates ‘robust’ and tolerates a broader range of environmental conditions. Robusta is simplier to grow on the farm, has greater bean yield and is better resistant to insects.

No, there are a lot of differences between Arabica beans that are farmed in different {countriesnations} & locations. This is due to the range of climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their culturing and processing.

The roasting proceedure also influences a major role in the flavour characteristics of the coffee. Blending different types & roasting is an art and science. Specialist roasters carefully control and adjust all aspects of the roasting proceedure to develop different flavours in their beans & maintain consistency between batches of beans. Flavour differs based on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee & a number of additional things that are regulated during the roasting.

Darker roasts will show a much richer, bolder flavour than lightly roasted coffee. Light roasted beans typcially retain more flavours than darker roasts. This can mean that the distinct tastes of the beans from the different locations are be more distinct in lighter roasted beans. This is key to consider when purchasing beans.
