FAQs

Arabica beans are cultured in many nations around the world. Brazil is the largest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is produced in many nations, each country and area will make a distinct taste from what is essentially the same coffee species due to their distinct climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are beans from the Coffea arabica tree which is commonly know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the global coffee bean production.

The taste of Arabica beans changes depending on the area, they are usually sweet with notes of chocolate & sugar. They can also have fruit or berry flavours & may exhibit hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to show more acidity and less bitterness than Robusta beans that are stronger, harsher and can have grainy or rubbery overtones.

Usually people find the taste of Arabica to be tastier to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are more acidic and less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid come through as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties can exhibit a less fruity taste.

Arabica coffee beans are typically considered as superior  tasting than Robusta beans as they have a more refined sweeter and less bitter flavour. However, some coffee blends than include both Arabica & Robusta can have superior taste and are very popular.

Arabica beans have caffeine but commonly less caffeine as opposed to Robusta coffee beans.

Raw Arabica beans have ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have about double as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the greater level of caffeine, many people would rather have Arabica as it is not as bitter and exhibits a better flavour.

Arabica coffee is most costly than Robusta beans as it is harder to grow.

Arabica is farmed in cooler sub-tropical climates and at a higher altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta on the other hand is commonly farmed at sea level & in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name suggests ‘robust’ & tolerates a broader range of climatic conditions. Robusta is simplier to tend to on the farm, has a higher bean yield and is more resistant to insects.

No, there is a lot of differences comparing Arabica beans that are farmed in different {countriesnations} and areas. This is due to the different climates, soils and other characteristics associated with their culturing and processing.

The roasting proceedure also plays a major role in the flavour profile of the coffee. Blending different varieties & roasting is both an art and science. Professional roasters meticulously control and change all aspects of the roast proceedure to make different flavours in their coffee & maintain consistency across batches of roasts. Taste differs based on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a number of other conditions that are controlled during the roast.

Darker roasts will exhibit a much richer, bolder taste than lightly roasted coffee. Light roasted coffee beans will retain more flavours than dark roasts. This can mean that the distinct tastes of the beans from the various areas are be more distinguishable in light roasted coffee. This is paramount to think about when purchasing coffee.
