FAQs

Arabica beans are farmed in many countries around the globe. Brazil is the largest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is farmed in many countries, each country and location will produce a distinct taste from what is basically the same coffee plant due to their distinct climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other things.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica tree which is usually know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up about 60% of the global coffee bean supply.

The taste of Arabica beans changes depending on the region, they are usually sweet with notes of coco & sugar. They can also exhibit fruit or berry tasts and can have hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to have more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans which tend to be stronger, harsher & may have grainy or rubbery overtones.

Typically people find the flavour of Arabica to be tastier to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are typcially more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid come through as fruity flavours. Low acidity types can exhibit a less fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are commonly known as nicer  tasting than Robusta beans as they display a more refined sweeter and less bitter flavour. However, some blends than include both Arabica & Robusta can display superior flavour & are very popular.

Arabica beans have caffeine but usually less caffeine than Robusta coffee.

Raw Arabica beans have about 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans contain about double as much caffeine, at 2.2percent.

Despite the higher level of caffeine, typically people prefer to consume Arabica as it is less bitter & has a better taste.

Arabica coffee is most costly compared to Robusta beans because it is harder to grow.

Arabica is farmed in colder sub-tropical climates and at a higher altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta on the other hand is typically farmed at sea level & in warmer climates.

Robusta is as its name indicates ‘robust’ & tolerates a wide range of climatic conditions. Robusta is easier to tend to on the farm, has greater fruit yield and is better resistant to pest insects.

No, there is a lot of differences between Arabica coffeecoffee beans that are grown in different {countriesnations} & regions. This is because of the different climates, soils and other characteristics associated with their culturing and processing.

The roast process also influences a major role in the flavour profile of the coffee beans. Mixing different types and roasting is an art and science. Specialist roasters carefully control & change all aspects of the roast process to craft different tastes in their beans and maintain consistency between batches of coffee. Taste changes depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a number of other aspects that are regulated during the roast.

Darker roasts will show a much richer, bolder taste than lightly roasted beans. Light roasted beans usually retain more flavours than darker roasts. This means that the distinguishable flavours of the beans from the different locations can often be more distinct in lighter roasted beans. This is key to consider when purchasing coffee.
