FAQs

Arabica beans are farmed in many countries around the world. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is farmed in many countries, each country & location will result in a different flavour from what is basically the same coffee tree due to their distinct climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other things.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica species which is typically know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the global coffee bean production.

The flavour of Arabica beans changes depending on the area, they are usually sweet with notes of chocolate & sugar. They can also exhibit fruit or berry flavours and may display hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to have more acidity and less bitterness than Robusta beans that are stronger, harsher & may exhibit grainy or rubbery overtones.

Typically people find the taste of Arabica to be tastier to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are usually more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are tasted as fruity flavours. Low acidity types may have a less fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are typically known as better  tasting than Robusta beans as they have a more refined sweeter & less bitter flavour. However, some blends than include both Arabica and Robusta can have superior flavour & are extremely popular.

Arabica beans have caffeine but typcially less caffeine compared to Robusta beans.

Raw Arabica beans have about 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans contain about double as much caffeine, at 2.2percent.

Despite the greater amount of caffeine, many people prefer to drink Arabica as it is less bitter & has a superior flavour.

Arabica coffee is more expensive compared to Robusta coffee as it is harder to grow.

Arabica is cultivated in colder sub-tropical climates and at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is usually farmed at sea level and in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name indicates ‘robust’ and tolerates a wide range of climatic conditions. Robusta is easier to tend to on the plantation, has a higher fruit yield and is better resistant to pest insects.

No, there are a lot of differences comparing Arabica beans that are grown in different {countriesnations} & areas. This is because of the different climates, soils and other characteristics associated with their culturing and preparation.

The roast process also plays a major role in the flavour characteristics of the coffee. Mixing different types and roasting is an art and science. Professional roasters meticulously control and change every aspect of the roasting process to develop different flavours in their beans & maintain consistency across batches of roasts. Flavour differs based on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a number of other conditions that are controlled during the process.

Darker roasts will show a much richer, bolder flavour than lighter roasted beans. Light roast coffee will retain more tastes than dark roasts. This can mean that the distinguishable flavours of the coffee from the different regions can often be more pronounced in lighter roasted coffee. This is important to think about when buying coffee.
