FAQs

Arabica beans are grown in many countries around the globe. Brazil is the largest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is cultured in many countries, each country and location will result in a distinct taste from what is basically the same coffee plant due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica species which is commonly know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the world’s coffee bean production.

The flavour of Arabica beans varies depending on the location, they are usually sweet with notes of coco and sugar. They can also exhibit fruit or berry flavours & may have hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to exhibit more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans which are stronger, harsher and can have grainy or rubbery tastes.

Usually people find the taste of Arabica to be nicer to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are typcially more acidic and less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are tasted as fruity flavours. Low acidity types can display a reduced fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are typically considered as nicer  tasting than Robusta beans as they exhibit a more refined sweeter & less bitter taste. However, some coffee blends than include both Arabica and Robusta can show superior flavour & are extremely renowned.

Arabica beans contain caffeine but commonly less caffeine than Robusta beans.

Raw Arabica beans have about 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have about double as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the greater amount of caffeine, commonly people would rather drink Arabica as it is not as bitter and shows a nicer flavour.

Arabica coffee is more expensive than Robusta coffee as it is harder to grow.

Arabica is grown in cooler sub-tropical climates & at a higher altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is usually cultivated at sea level & in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name suggests ‘robust’ and tolerates a wide range of climatic conditions. Robusta is easier to grow on the farm, has greater bean yield and is more resistant to pests.

No, there is a lot of differences comparing Arabica coffeecoffee beans that are grown in different {countriesnations} & areas. This is because of the range of climates, soils and other characteristics associated with their farming and preparation.

The roast process also plays a major part in the flavour profile of the coffee. Combining different varieties & roasting is both an art & science. Specialist roasters carefully control & change all aspects of the roast proceedure to make different flavours in their beans & maintain consistency across batches of beans. Taste changes based on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee & a range of other conditions that are regulated during the roasting.

Darker roasts will show a much richer, bolder taste than lightly roasted coffee. Light roasted coffee beans will keep more flavours than darker roasts. This can mean that the marked flavours of the beans from the various regions can often be more pronounced in lighter roasted beans. This is important to think about when buying beans.
