FAQs

Arabica beans are produced in many countries around the globe. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is grown in many countries, each country & location will result in a different flavour from what is essentially the same coffee tree due to their distinct climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica tree that are usually know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the global coffee bean supply.

The taste of Arabica beans varies depending on the region, they are usually sweet with notes of coco and sugar. They can also have fruit or berry flavours & can display hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to exhibit more acidity and less bitterness than Robusta beans which are stronger, harsher and can show grainy or rubbery overtones.

Typically people find the flavour of Arabica to be superior to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are usually more acidic and less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are exhibited as fruity flavours. Low acidity types can exhibit a less fruity taste.

Arabica coffee beans are typically known as better  tasting than Robusta beans as they exhibit a more refined sweeter and less bitter flavour. However, some coffee blends than include both Arabica and Robusta can exhibit nicerbetter flavour and are extremely renowned.

Arabica beans have caffeine but usually less caffeine compared to Robusta beans.

Raw Arabica beans have ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have almost double as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the higher level of caffeine, typically people would rather have Arabica as it is less bitter & exhibits a superior taste.

Arabica coffee is most costly than Robusta beans because it is harder to farm.

Arabica is grown in colder sub-tropical climates & at a higher altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta on the other hand is commonly grown at sea level and in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name indicates ‘robust’ and tolerates a broader range of environmental conditions. Robusta is easier to tend to on the farm, has greater bean yield & is more resistant to pests.

No, there is a lot of differences between Arabica beans that are grown in different {countriesnations} & regions. This is due to the range of climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their culturing and processing.

The roast proceedure also influences a major role in the flavour profile of the coffee. Combining different varieties & roasting is an art & science. Specialist roasters carefully control & change all aspects of the roasting process to develop different flavours in their coffee & ensure consistency across batches of coffee. Taste differs based on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a number of other things that are regulated during the process.

Darker roasts will have a much richer, bolder taste than lightly roasted beans. Light roast coffee beans usually keep more flavours than darker roasts. This can mean that the distinct tastes of the beans from the various regions are be more distinguishable in lighter roasted coffee. This is paramount to think about when buying coffee.
