FAQs

Arabica beans are cultured in many nations around the world. Brazil is the largest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is grown in many countries, each country and area will make a different flavour from what is basically the same coffee species due to their distinct climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other things.

Arabica coffee beans are beans from the Coffea arabica tree which is commonly know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the world’s coffee bean supply.

The flavour of Arabica beans changes depending on the area, they are generally sweet with notes of coco and sugar. They can also display fruit or berry flavours and may exhibit hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to exhibit more acidity and less bitterness than Robusta beans which are typically stronger, harsher and can show grainy or rubbery tastes.

Usually people find the taste of Arabica to be tastier to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid come through as fruity flavours. Low acidity types may have a less fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are usually known as nicer  tasting than Robusta beans as they show a more refined sweeter & less bitter flavour. However, some blended coffee than include both Arabica and Robusta can display superior flavour and are very renowned.

Arabica beans have caffeine but usually less caffeine as opposed to Robusta coffee beans.

Raw Arabica beans contain ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have about twice as much caffeine, at 2.2percent.

Despite the higher amount of caffeine, commonly people prefer to drink Arabica as it is not as bitter and shows a better flavour.

Arabica coffee is more expensive than Robusta beans as it is harder to grow.

Arabica is farmed in colder sub-tropical climates and at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta on the other hand is often farmed at sea level and in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name indicates ‘robust’ & tolerates a broader range of environmental conditions. Robusta is simplier to tend to on the plantation, has greater bean yield and is better resistant to insects.

No, there are a lot of differences comparing Arabica beans that are farmed in different {countriesnations} and locations. This is due to the different climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their farming and preparation.

The roast process also plays a significant part in the taste profile of the beans. Blending different types and roasting is both an art and science. Specialist roasters carefully control & adjust all aspects of the roast process to develop different flavours in their beans and maintain consistency across batches of beans. Flavour changes depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee & a number of additional aspects that are controlled during the process.

Darker roasts will show a much richer, bolder taste than lightly roasted coffee. Light roast beans usually retain more flavours than darker roasts. This means that the distinguishable tastes of the beans from the different areas can often be more distinguishable in light roasted coffee. This is key to think about when purchasing coffee beans.
