FAQs

Arabica beans are grown in many countries around the globe. Brazil is the largest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is produced in many countries, each nation & location will produce a distinct taste from what is essentially the same coffee tree due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other things.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica tree that are commonly know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up about 60% of the global coffee bean supply.

The taste of Arabica beans varies depending on the region, they are typically sweet with notes of coco & sugar. They can also exhibit fruit or berry flavours & may display hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to display more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans which are typically stronger, harsher & can exhibit grainy or rubbery tastes.

Manny people find the flavour of Arabica to be tastier to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are more acidic and less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are exhibited as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties may display a reduced fruity taste.

Arabica coffee beans are typically considered as better  tasting than Robusta beans as they exhibit a more refined sweeter & less bitter flavour. However, some blends than include both Arabica and Robusta can exhibit superior taste and are very popular.

Arabica beans contain caffeine but typcially less caffeine as opposed to Robusta coffee beans.

Raw Arabica beans contain ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans contain almost twice as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the higher level of caffeine, typically people prefer to consume Arabica as it is less bitter & shows a better flavour.

Arabica coffee is more expensive compared to Robusta coffee as it is more difficult to farm.

Arabica is farmed in cooler sub-tropical climates and at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta on the other hand is often farmed at sea level & in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name indicates ‘robust’ and tolerates a wide range of environmental conditions. Robusta is simplier to grow on the farm, has more bean yield & is better resistant to pest insects.

No, there is a lot of differences between Arabica beans that are grown in different {countriesnations} and locations. This is because of the range of climates, soils and other characteristics associated with their culturing and preparation.

The roast proceedure also plays a major part in the taste profile of the coffee beans. Blending different types and roasting is an art and science. Specialist roasters meticulously control & adjust all aspects of the roasting process to make different tastes in their beans & ensure consistency between batches of roasts. Flavour differs based on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a number of additional aspects that are regulated during the roast.

Darker roasts will have a much richer, bolder flavour than lighter roasted beans. Light roast beans will retain more flavours than dark roasts. This can mean that the distinguishable flavours of the coffee from the various locations are be more distinguishable in lighter roasted beans. This is key to think about when purchasing coffee beans.
