FAQs

Arabica beans are farmed in many countries around the globe. Brazil is the largest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is produced in many countries, each nation & area will produce a distinct taste from what is basically the same coffee bush due to their distinct climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other things.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica plant which is usually know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up about 60% of the global coffee bean supply.

The taste of Arabica beans varies depending on the area, they are typically sweet with notes of coco & sugar. They can also show fruit or berry tasts and can exhibit hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to have more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans which are stronger, harsher & can show grainy or rubbery flavours.

Usually people find the taste of Arabica to be better to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are typcially more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid come through as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties can exhibit a reduced fruity taste.

Arabica coffee beans are usually known as superior  tasting than Robusta beans as they have a more refined sweeter and less bitter flavour. However, some blended coffee than include both Arabica and Robusta can display superior taste & are very renowned.

Arabica beans have caffeine but usually less caffeine as opposed to Robusta coffee.

Raw Arabica beans have about 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans contain about double as much caffeine, at 2.2percent.

Despite the greater level of caffeine, commonly people would rather consume Arabica because it is not as bitter and has a superior taste.

Arabica coffee is most costly compared to Robusta coffee as it is more difficult to farm.

Arabica is farmed in colder sub-tropical climates and at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is typically farmed at sea level & in warmer climates.

Robusta is as its name would suggest ‘robust’ and tolerates a wide range of climatic conditions. Robusta is easier to grow on the farm, has more fruit yield and is better resistant to insects.

No, there are a lot of differences between Arabica beans that are cultured in different {countriesnations} and locations. This is because of the range of climates, soils and other characteristics associated with their farming and processing.

The roasting process also influences a major part in the taste characteristics of the coffee. Mixing different varieties & roasting is both an art & science. Specialist roasters meticulously control and change all aspects of the roasting process to develop different flavours in their coffee and maintain consistency between batches of roasts. Flavour changes depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a range of additional things that are regulated during the process.

Darker roasts will have a much richer, bolder taste than lighter roasted coffee. Light roasted coffee beans usually retain more tastes than dark roasts. This can mean that the distinct tastes of the coffee from the different regions are be more distinguishable in lighter roasted beans. This is key to consider when buying coffee.
